I can't even imagine the possibilities for us if our athletic budget was double what it is. It's currently around 23 million. What is Memphis' and ECU's? I'm guessing in the 40-50 mill range. If we had that much we'd be undefeated every year in football, dancing every year in bball, and baseball would be hosting national seeds every year. USM has never been able to grow its fanbase because we are literally surrounded by nearly every SEC school: Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, MSU, and Tennessee. People ask why USM can't grow its fanbase...this is why. It's a cycle...any successful coach/administrator/AD/president will ALWAYS get poached by someone who can pay 2-3 times the amount.
LA Tech does well with less too.
I know some Southern Miss fans moan about being left behind by their former piers, but if the leadership at USM is content to try and survive by doing more with less, then their fans will probably always be moaning about other programs passing them by. As for being surrounded by several SEC programs, that is not a good excuse. Truth is, just about every G5 program has to contend with power conferences in their region. In Texas, we have to contend with 11 other FBS programs, 5 of which are in power conferences. Just within a hundred mile radius we have a Big12 and AAC program to contend with, but North Texas isn't just giving up. I really hope the leadership at Southern Miss figures out a plan to invest more into your athletics. Your fans deserve it.
Ok, a few points you fail to realize:
-Mississippi's population vs Texas' population
-Any decent person in a leadership role at USM gets poached by a school that can afford to pay 2-3 times what we can
-The SEC dominates the small populated Southern states that USM has to fight recruits for. If USM was located in Texas or North Carolina and having to battle with Baylor, Texas Tech, UNC, and NC STATE instead of being in Mississippi having to battle Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State then life would be a LOT easier for USM athletics
-No other P5 conference has the clout and power that the SEC has ESPECIALLY in South.
People try to compare their school's recruiting battles with the B12 and ACC schools as the same as battling the SEC and I just laughed, like seriously you have no idea what it's like battling the SEC in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
You really don't see the big picture. Every major program in America cherry picks the best recruits from Texas. Just ask a fan of any G5 located in Texas. USM might have to contend with the bulk of the SEC for best recruits in Mississippi, but in Texas we have to fight with the BIG12, SEC, BIG10, ACC, PAC, plus Notre Dame, along with the numerous other G5's located in Texas. Truth is with what Southern Miss is willing to spend on athletics they would be killed if they were in Texas. Every G5 program has issues to overcome.
And every school in the nation recruits Mississippi too. Can't tell you how many kids that don't sign with Ala, Aub, Tenn, OM, MSU, LSU, go on and sign with WVU, Louisville, Texas Tech, Oregon, ASU...
Texas has 30 million people...
Mississippi has like 2.5 million people...
C'mon...
Be honest, you know the power conferences don't recruit Mississippi like they do Texas. They don't recruit any other state like they do Texas.
Texas is the top state in America for college football talent. Mississippi came in ranked 11th. Believe me, the Texas G5 programs have to nationally recruit our local talent, because every power conference is flying in trying to lure our athletes out of state. USM is not in as tough of a recruiting situation as the Texas G5's. Here is a link to the 2017 rankings.
