Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School - Side Show Joe - 12-26-2017 12:17 PM

Got these from the USA Today site. Interesting to compare these salaries to those of other conferences. To an extent, I believe these salaries represent our ability to keep quality coaching staffs. Among the G5, the AAC (abt $1.8M) seems to pay the best, followed by the MWC (abt $1.5M) and then C-USA (abt $1.1M), followed by the Sun Belt (abt $950K), and the MAC bringing up the rear (abt $890K). That follows fairly closely in line with the overall success of each conference. In my opinion, we need to get our salaries more inline with the AAC and MWC and do a better job of poaching the better assistant coaches (coordinators) from the MAC and Sun Belt. Thoughts?

Here are our assistants' pool by programs.

FIU- $1,371,050
North Texas- $1,335,000
FAU- $1,260,000
Marshall- $1,216,214
WKU- $1,200,012
UTEP- $1,199,860
MT- $1,188,296
UTSA- $1,147,750
LA Tech- $1,135,000
ODU- $1,109,566
Charlotte- $1,008,500
UAB- $989,750
Southern Miss- $820,000
Rice- NA

we pay our OC $50k because he currently is paid $500k by Kentucky and he has a cap he can make before voiding the Kentucky contract.

Other than that, we poor.

We all need to up our salaries. For example: Sean Cronin was making $94,500 in 2016 as Marshall's DE coach, and did a solid job. He was hired away by South Florida to coach DTs and now makes $200,000. We have to be able to protect our programs from other G5s raiding us. In my opinion, we all need to add another $500K to assistant salaries. That would place us right between the AAC and MWC.

RE: Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School - bit_9 - 12-26-2017 02:32 PM

Yup! We lost our WR's coach to VT. Went from 55 to 180k, I believe. That was a killer loss for us.

RE: Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School - MTPiKapp - 12-26-2017 02:55 PM

The AAC is closer to us than they are to P5 when it comes to budget, but they still have a sizeable advantage, especially when comparing the top of the AAC to the bottom of CUSA.

Exactly. And with USM getting ready to add beach volleyball for Title IX purposes I imagine we will redefine the word poor.

I know we were paying Assoc HC/OC Darrell Dickey 305,000 while the rest made between 200-250k

that's far and away the most Memphis has ever paid it's asst coaches.

Dickey was a great coach for us, especially considering what he had to work with back then. We honored him and his 2002 New Orleans Bowl Championship Team this past season. Glad to see him doing well at Memphis. I never liked the way he left North Texas. Our former AD should have handled that situation better.

Coach Dickey stuck with Memphis the last 4 years under both Justin Fuente and Mike Norvell...it's the best 4 year run in Memphis football history and he was a big part of it.

Coach Dickey just accepted the OC position at Texas AM under Jimbo Fisher where he will make more than double what we were paying him. I hear he's set to make 650k at Texas AM. I say good for him...he earned it!

He will be a tough one to replace. Didn't realize A&M had snatched him up. Just can't pay what the P5's can. I hope Dickey gets another shot at a head coaching job. He deserves it.

It'll never happen but I'd love to see Memphis take the 305k we were paying Dickey and offer it to Joey Jones (former USA HC)

WKU is getting ripped off, I really think we need an upgrade in our assistant coaches besides our DC....

RE: Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School - HogDawg - 12-27-2017 11:15 PM

Most people's reactions to these salaries are just silly. There's only about 260K spread (difference) between the top school (FAU) and the 10th rated school (ODU). And the other 4 aren't that far out of range either.

A spread this small could easily be attributed to a number of things. First, how about timing of the hires? If most of ODU's or LA Tech's assistant coaches were hired 2 or 3 years ago and FAU's were hired last summer (when Kiffin came in), doesn't it make sense that the newer the contracts the more likely the salaries will be higher?

Also, a coach who's been around a while, wins a lot of games and has a sterling reputation for running a clean program, simply may not have to pay as much for assistant coaches as new guy might.

If I'm an assistant coach looking for a job, I want to work for a coach who, 1) wins a lot, 2) will give me the best opportunity to learn and excel, and 3) has the most coaching and AD contacts in and around the country. In fact, I will likely accept less money (within reason) to work under a certain coach if all of the other parameters are in place.

RE: Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School - MTPiKapp - 12-27-2017 11:19 PM

When you consider our coordinators, it makes sense we are at the top.

Tony Franklin came left a P5 OC job(Cal) and was the best OC we've had in the FBS era his one previous year here.

Scott Shafer was a year removed from P5 HC(Syracuse) when he joined the staff.

Considering we are in the most economically depressed area of any in the league and our AD doesn't really care to build the fan base, we'll stay where we are and continue to treas water and hope to stay competitive.

USM has always (will always) do more with less better than anyone in the country. I can't even imagine the possibilities for us if our athletic budget was double what it is. It's currently around 23 million. What is Memphis' and ECU's? I'm guessing in the 40-50 mill range. If we had that much we'd be undefeated every year in football, dancing every year in bball, and baseball would be hosting national seeds every year. USM has never been able to grow its fanbase because we are literally surrounded by nearly every SEC school: Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, MSU, and Tennessee. People ask why USM can't grow its fanbase...this is why. It's a cycle...any successful coach/administrator/AD/president will ALWAYS get poached by someone who can pay 2-3 times the amount.

LA Tech does well with less too.

I know some Southern Miss fans moan about being left behind by their former piers, but if the leadership at USM is content to try and survive by doing more with less, then their fans will probably always be moaning about other programs passing them by. As for being surrounded by several SEC programs, that is not a good excuse. Truth is, just about every G5 program has to contend with power conferences in their region. In Texas, we have to contend with 11 other FBS programs, 5 of which are in power conferences. Just within a hundred mile radius we have a Big12 and AAC program to contend with, but North Texas isn't just giving up. I really hope the leadership at Southern Miss figures out a plan to invest more into your athletics. Your fans deserve it.

according to the CA it was 50.115 million in 2016
