Parrish - "a lie" it takes time to turn Memphis basketball & how hard it is to bad
Parrish cited the examples of UNLV and TCU, both of which are now top 25 quality teams ---- but started in a worse position than Tubby's Memphis only two years ago. He said both programs made the turn around by recruiting a mix of high school and transfers. So he said that Memphis fans have every right to be angry and that they shouldn't believe "the lie" that this takes time. He added that Memphis is now in a worse position than two seasons back. ----- In fact, Parrish had made the observation earlier that 'it is harder to do what Tubby has done to the basketball program than what has been done in Memphis football.'

Although I loath his show (I cannot find a decent sports talk show in Memphis), Parrish is right. Tubby is torpedoing the program, but fortunately the elements are in place for a quick rebuild.

Wow! Gary is a genius. I bet most Memphis fans thought we were in better position now than two years back and we all thought it should take 5 years to rebuild. I hate Gary Parrish. This is the same guy that knows everything. He even predicted more than a week ago that Norvell would be at Memphis. Not because he wanted to be but that he was good but not at the top of the list that anyone wanted. Oh and he name drops all the time and so. Oh yeah and says and so 5 million times

Are we presuming that TCU and UNLV have made their turnaround ethically? Nothing gets the attention of the NCAA like an overnight success story.

Parrish stirring the pot. They knew how Tubby did things before they hired him. Whether he will or not is worth talking about, but to criticize because he isn't doing it the way we knew he wouldn't is just stirring the pot.

The team is an easy fix... fan support will be tougher to rebuild.

Adept PR and winning will bring fans back, although not at the same leve previously IMO due to competing entertainment options (eg, watch at home and the Griz).

Pretty much every single person talking about the Tub hire thought for sure he would be getting higher levels of talent than he was able to get at his previous 2 schools.

Bit harsh calling it a LIE.

But thanks Gary for the deep thought based presentation that sometimes basketball teams can turn around quickly with a really good set of recruits.

Now we know.

He’s recruiting worse here than he ever has in his career. With all the natural advantages, he is still not even recruiting at a basic Memphis level.

The problem is way more than Tubby. It starts at the top, whomever that is. It started with Pastner's insane extension after he beat St Mary's. Coulda had a good coach with half the money we paid Tubby.

That's a reasonable point of discussion/argument. Parrish's piece isn't. Just making a point that Parrish is full of it on this one.

I think part of the idea behind the Tubby hire would be that he would be able to recruit the area talent - and there is plenty of it and its top level. How many area players has Tubby recruited to Memphis in the time he has been here. None? Now add how many have left. Lots? Tough to be that all round 'fail' but Tubby has pulled it off.
