RE: Jay Bilas wants to limit Div I-A Hoops to Top 100-120 schools
The Ivy League has won a tournament game in 3 of the last 5 years. And the 2 losses were each by 2 points. Harvard also has more tournament wins in the past 5 seasons than anyone in the AAC not named Cincinnati/UCONN/Wichita.
More deserving than at least 3/4 of the A10 and 1/3 of the American. Not to mention they're pretty much the only real STUDENT athletes in college basketball...

WSU isn’t a Top 100 program?
Actually, any one of your bubbles aren’t Top 100?

I may take issue with the term "student" as a generic label for Ivy League attendees. See: nepotism & pass-fail curricula.

I don't see myself still being a fan of college basketball when the inevitable split happens. I just hope it doesn't happen for a very long time.
I get that it is nice to have a Cinderella team, but are there really 340 real Div 1 teams? The same thing with football. I mean does the sunbelt, mac, and c-usa really represent D-1 football? Most of these schools are just going after playoff money and road buy games. Ga. State can only manage to produce $8 million in actual revenue for all of the athletics programs. That is tickets, boosters, ads, corporate sponsors, apparel deals, etc and still can't even get to $10 million.
There are some teams that are literally never going to succeed but there are plenty of teams that were bottom of the barrel and have managed to have some sliver of "success." College basketball really just takes one good coaching hire and you can become a threat. FGCU was a 300+ team and went to the Sweet 16 3 years later. Texas Southern was the 6th worst team in D1 and became a top 150 team in the worst conference with probably a $0 budget, winning at a few P5 schools in the process. Not allowing those schools to be on the same floor as a P7 is a disservice to the sport.

But I do agree that the entire MWC should be cut. No one's tuning into that suck at 1 AM.

While I can get behind the dig, I love west coast basketball. As a CBB junkie, games that start after 9PM awesome. Just extends my ability to spend time watching CBB.
Edit: Let me rephrase, I love west coast start times. West coast basketball sucks. Apparently defense never made it over the Rockies.

The top 300 teams are in a constant state of flux. Bucknell, Bradley, and UNI have all been ranked over 250 at one time or another and managed to topple the Holy ChicKUn when it mattered most.
SMU was over 200 sometimes 250 for much of the 00's. I could look up more schools but I think I've made my point.

Like to stop car thieves, we just give them all the cars they want.
Let's ignore the fact that, just like the cars, the players are not Bilas' to give.
That was my first thought, also.
It's kind of like saying, along those same lines, why not just take the lesson learned to not conduct this type activity across state lines?
No one seemed to care about this before the Feds got involved. That, in itself, says many things.

RE: Jay Bilas wants to limit Div I-A Hoops to Top 100-120 schools
P5 = 65
AAC = 12
Big East = 10
There is 87.
Next would likely be the A10 (which has 14).
That gets us to 101.
Other full conferences are unlikely, so the rest (if any) would be anybody's guess. Great teams in weak conferences (like the Zags and St. Mary's in the WCC), could be invited individually without including their entire conference.

Obama did that with cell phones. Obama was a very popular president.
There used to be a time when handouts were firmly rejected on pride alone. Handouts are now expected. America's reign as leader of the free world is nearly over. Anybody think the Chinese will have empathy for us?

He specifically noted how "directional schools" should not be in this collective top Div I-A group.
Basically, he wants top schools to be able to horde all the top talent (vs it being spread out), plus, make it "ok" for those top schools to cheat so that he has less teams he needs to study about during the regular season or March Madness.
Only schools that field FBS football and I'm in.

Why 120? Why not 12? That's what he really means.
What will the NCAA tourney look like with more than half the teams in it. What is the point of conference play at that point.
So the future is a 120 teams basketball league with 64 team tourney and a 130 team footbal league with a 4 team tourney. Only the NCAA...

Basically, Jay Bilas wants to ruin everything that's great about college basketball. No more Cinderellas. I guess he missed the memo that the NCAA makes most of its money off March Madness. Jay Bilas is an idiot anyway.

NCAA has almost nothing to do with college football. The schools wrested control of TV and bowl money from them in 1984. NCAA BB Tourney is essentially their only paying gig.
