Jay Bilas wants to limit Div I-A Hoops to Top 100-120 schools
On an ESPN Radio interview today...Bilas was talking about how power programs were the ones who have been cheating the most...so in order to help them correct their problem, he wants it to be easier for them to recruit if they narrowed Div I-A Hoops to the Top 100-120 schools...so that more talent can be on those rosters...so when they lose 1 and dones...it can stay a top program year after year after year.
He specifically noted how "directional schools" should not be in this collective top Div I-A group.
Basically, he wants top schools to be able to horde all the top talent (vs it being spread out), plus, make it "ok" for those top schools to cheat so that he has less teams he needs to study about during the regular season or March Madness.

I like Bilas as an analyst but his ideas are just whack.

WSU isn’t a Top 100 program?
Actually, any one of your bubbles aren’t Top 100?

There definitely needs to be a pairing down. There's no reason why schools like Longwood and UMass-Lowell should be in the same division as the high resource programs.
I'm more inclined towards ~150. I think all the schools in the AAC would be safe in that group along with the MWC, and schools like Gonzaga and St. Mary's. Thinking out loud, even if the number is only 120, I think the AAC would be included.

Top 120
Givens:
ACC: 15
Big 12: 10
Big East: 10
Big 10: 14
Pac 12: 12
SEC: 14
AAC: 12
Total: 87
Probably
A-10: 14
MW: 11
Gonzaga
St. Mary's
BYU
Total: 115
Others Pick 5 to get to 120:
FGCU: Atlantic Sun
Hawai'i: Big West
Middle Tennessee: Conference USA
UAB: Conference USA
Southern Miss: Conference USA
Western Kentucky: Conference USA
Bradley: MVC
Missouri St: MVC
Northern Iowa: MVC
Illinois St: MVC
Belmont: Ohio Valley
Grand Canyon: WAC
I would pick Northern Iowa, FGCU, Missouri St, Grand Canyon, and Bradley. Probably should eliminate some of the Atlantic 10 and MW teams in there as well.

Wait, so rather than hold "power programs" accountable for the rules, instead the NCAA should force other schools to effectively disband their programs? Once that happens, of course, schools are automatically going to stop scheming to figure out ways to get the best talents to go there instead of one of the other "power programs," right?
So being a "power program" is a birth right, and none of those uppity new programs should be coming along to challenge the status quo, right?
Dumbest thing I've ever heard. Years ago, when Gonzaga and Butler weren't particularly strong programs, they would have been on the outside of this looking in. Plus, for me, half of the fun is watching schools I've never heard of winning (or at least putting a good scare) into the "power programs," whether it's FGCU's Dunk City a few years ago or that Northern Iowa ridiculous long range jumper to beat Kansas.

So to stop future cheating, the idea is just give the cheaters what they were cheating for?
Like to stop car thieves, we just give them all the cars they want.
Let's ignore the fact that, just like the cars, the players are not Bilas' to give.

120 is probably unworkable but 200 certainly.

Dumbest idea I've ever heard. I thought college is a learning environment. By encouraging schools not to worry about losing 1 and dones, it cheapens the learning aspect, while instead going for more 1 and done elite talent. When are pundants ever going to encourage advancing education, instead of worrying about what's best for elite schools making lots of money? After all, college sports should not be encouraged to become the minor leagues of various pro sports.

Jay Bilas is trying as hard as he can to become literally everything that is wrong with college basketball all rolled up into one person. He's getting very close.

Jay Bilas needs to understand that the very reason college basketball is so popular is because it channels the American Dream where everybody has a chance to experience that "One Shining Moment". Butler and George Mason are excellent examples of this plus all the schools whose name starts with B that have sent the ChicKUns packing (Bucknell, Bradley, Baylor).

He's just trying to modernize the American dream, where the big corps crush any upstart with help from the government.

I know I'm in the minority but I watch way more non-P7 basketball than I do P7 basketball and that's going to remain true even as a fan of a P7 school. I don't see myself still being a fan of college basketball when the inevitable split happens. I just hope it doesn't happen for a very long time.

I get that it is nice to have a Cinderella team, but are there really 340 real Div 1 teams? The same thing with football. I mean does the sunbelt, mac, and c-usa really represent D-1 football? Most of these schools are just going after playoff money and road buy games. Ga. State can only manage to produce $8 million in actual revenue for all of the athletics programs. That is tickets, boosters, ads, corporate sponsors, apparel deals, etc and still can't even get to $10 million.
