Top CUSA QB?
Without a doubt Devin Singletary runs away with CUSA POTY in 2017 but what are your thoughts on the QB rankings for 1st/2nd team All-CUSA. I think it will be harder than you think
Mike White (WKU) 2986 yards, 65% completion, 17 Tds/ 7 INts
Mason Fine (UNT) 2804 yards, 64%, 22 Tds/ 9 Ints, 92 yards rushing/ 1 TD
J'Mar Smith (LT) 2454 yds, 57%, 11 Tds/ 4 Ints, 289 yards rushing/ 2 TDs
Chase Litton (Mar) 2356 yds, 60%, 18 TDs/ 10 INTs
Alex McGough (FIU) 2051, 64%, 11 TDs/ 7 INTs, 122 yds rushing/ 4 TDs
Dalton Sturm (UTSA) 1830 yds, 62%, 15 TDs/ 3 INTs, 499 yds rushing/ 2 TDs
AJ Erdely (UAB) 1741 yds, 61%, 13 TDs/ 3 INTs, 290 yds rushing/ 12 TDs
Do you go with 3000 yard guys like White and Fine or do you go with guys like Sturm and Erdely who do well in the air but show their value in the running game?

You would have a hard time convincing me of anyone but AJ.
He has a 4-to-1 TD to INT ratio (only bested by Sturm), and he is responsible for more TDs than anyone else in the league including Singletary. And then there is the factor of being the QB that's led UAB back from the ashes. IMO, this is a no brainer but the media dolts will look at Fine's and White's passing numbers like the guys in Idocracy and start drooling.

Agreed, but obviously he meant statistically for conference awards. Brent's not winning any awards this year having missed half the season.

Sure Stockstill is great but I'm talking about for the season and not talent wise. Unfortunately, his injury will prevent any post season awards.

Sturm or Erdely looks like a no brainer to me. 3000 yards passing is fine, but the higher turnovers and lower TD totals hurt. Remember too that a running QB has to be respected, which helps the running game as well.

It also prevented a lot of wins too. So, no worries.

I kind of agree with you. You can't fault AJ for being in a heavy run offense. That is what they do and do it well. When your QB has 12 rushing Tds and a solid TD to INT ratio there is nothing else you can ask for.
Same with Sturm except the rest of the offense is inept.

I give AJ the edge because of 7-3 vs. 5-4. and because he leads the league in TD's accounted for. That's not something that should be overlooked. I know QB's don't play defense but that is the one position that controls the outcome of game more than any other position. Much respect for both guys though.

I would agree. You are also right in thinking that it will go to either White or Fine due to passing yards/ passing TDs. That is just usually how it works.
If I had to pick out of those two, I would go with Fine. He might be one of the best scramblers in CUSA but really hasn't had to flash that part of his game this year due to the fact that he is in an air raid offense and Jeffery Wilson does a great job running the ball.

Yeah "top CUSA QB" was all I was responding to.
Hoping for 14 starts for Brent and Richie next year...

I think Fine will end up getting 2nd Team All CUSA this year, then 1st team his JR/SR years
We have decent backups behind Wilson but I have a feeling we'll be throwing it more when Wilson is gone.

1st Team: Mason Fine
2nd Team: Mike White
Honorable Mention: AJ Erdely
Fine is a few yards behind White, but he has 5 more TDs. Also, Fine has won more games than White has (he took a last minute blast against UTSA to win UNT that game.) AJ is a good QB, but I feel he is getting more consideration than he deserves simply because it is UAB’s first season back. You also have to consider the offense these guys are in. UNT is air raid by pretty much name only. Average around 300 yards passing and around 100 yards rushing per game. It’s been a fairly balanced offensive attack. If the staff wanted to they could shift to a much heavier passing attack and then the stats wouldn’t even be close. WKU is only passing (last week they had something like 19 attempts for 36 yards), so White’s stats should be higher. AJ’s system is rushing based so he should have a good TD:INT ratio because that’s what they need him to do. He needs to be a game manager, not a game winner.

To the victors go the spoils. With similar numbers to some of the others, winning the Western Division will probably put Fine in the top spot.

Yeah, that whole leading the league in touchdowns is totally misleading.

Yea this is a bold statement. The only teams losing their QB this year is WKU, UTSA and FIU. Stockstill, Erdely, J'Mar Smith, Chase Litton etc will all be back. Not sure you can go ahead and crown Fine already.

If Stockstill plays a full season next year, he's the easy favorite.

Just the variables of the season. How healthy does the line stay? Can you complement with a run game? Is the OL capable of protecting 40 times a game? Do the receivers show up every day? And that doesn't even include the possibility of an injury (ESPECIALLY when you run the QB).
Plus, it never goes like you think or hope it's going to.

Some of you know I went to UT for undergrad. Graduated with Peyton. It took Peyton graduating and a kid named Tee Martin to take Tennessee to the promised land. Throw out everything you think you know. Start from scratch. That's what '18 will hold. Nobody knows right now.
