Not talking specifically about you here but . . .

If you can't see it by now you're ignoring it. Recruiting isn't going to get better. He's not going to become a better coach. THis year is likely no post-season. Next year is probably no postseason also. Would we keep him a 4th year? I can't see why. So now or in 2 years makes no difference. The money is a sunk cost

If we look at morale and attendance including what we might owe the Forum, one can argue that more money will be lost if we keep him two more years.

It's a tough situation.

It's tough to go tell a booster sorry you promised all this money that's a waste but we have to move on. But it's the right decision. Why continue to waste the money that you know won't return anything.

There are reams of coaches and assistants who work at low-major and mid-major programs who would walk to Memphis for the chance to be head or assistant coach. You can hire these guys for 600 or 700k to be a head coach and 100k to be an assistant. Pick random low-major conference and pick a guys in his 30s or 40s who have been successful there and hasn't gotten his shot. You can pluck them whenever.

We can't afford to make a splash hire anymore. That route is closed at the moment. We don't need Cal. We just need somebody decent to work hard so that our immense basketball advantages over most of our conference mates can elevate us to the top of conference again.

I seem to recall this EXACT same discussion about 18-21 months ago, lol.

If you look at who Tubby is, how he operated, and what he's actually accomplished the last decade + why would anyone think he was a good fit here? Especially for $3 million a year plus the extra cost for his dead weight son?

Foolish and idiotic decision that could easily have been avoided. He's the anti-Pastner for sure but different doesn't mean better.

welp....Yeah. When Tubby got here some were saying he couldn't recruit himself out of wet paper bag.

But this is Memphis, some of us were thinking. Recruits can just fall into his lap without him having to stand up.

Where did that thinking go wrong?

That's the thing that I don't get . . . How can this Athletic Department be so spot on with their past 2 football hires and miss so badly with the Tubby hire. He would have been PERFECT for post Cal, not so much right now.

They are dedicated to football more than they are basketball (rightfully so). Tubby was brought in to (hopefully) bring moderate success without any baggage or potential NCAA violations.

Here's my dream: The FBI gets as big as some say it will, and some big name program needs a Grampa's-Clean-As-A-Whistle coach to restore their credibility for a few years, and takes Tubby off our hands.

For some reason, Rudd, Laurie and Martin fell in love with the idea of Tubby....he was the anti-Pastner. They hardly looked at anyone else.

At the time there was a push for us to join the Big 12. Tubby would have ideal for a caretaker role while we transition to the Big 12. Otherwise, the hire did not make sense,IMHO.

They had a professional group advise on the football coach and a booster advise on basketball coach.

Bowen continues to prove how right the fat feller that "confronted" him at the spring game really is. They still paying the wrong coach too much.

I could have done better too, but would have wanted more money to pay the players, more to hire assistant coaches to run the practices, do the scouting, recruiting, coach the games, and necessary dirty work. I would be willing to give the pre-game pep-talk and half time assessment. Would need a PR guy for the post game media and too glad hand the normal fans. I would be willing to rub elbows with the high dollar donors. Would also want a limo & driver and a clothes allowance. Would need the university to pay legal fees for a high profile lawyer and associates. Most importantly would need a fall guy. I would take the job for about 20 mil a year with a 10-year contract payable in full regardless.

They probably watch Griz versus Warriors and think Mike Conley is the best player on the floor.
