So this article addresses a couple calls in the game, with video of the personal foul on the FG for "leaping". They didn't even mention the facemask penalty later in the game, which I think was the worst call of the game.

Despite all that USM out gained Tenn
USM- 279
Tenn- 210

Penalties:
USM- 14 for 120
Tenn- 3 for 29

USM had two big turnovers on there half of the field in the second half that led to 14 points.

Well, I'd say take care of the ball and the refs wouldn't have mattered.

Take the 120 yards off as negative yardage, and USM only "gained" 159 yards, Tenn. 181.

It's not just the penalty yardage, many times the Eagles were pinned deep deep deep...or USM made a decent catch on offense or tackle on defense, and that TOO was negated.

There is enough blame to go around---coaches, QB and refs---to make a winnable game a huge cluster f^ck!04-cheers

RE: Tenn-USM, SEC Officials- Video
I thought the leaping call was the worst call I have ever seen in college football when I saw it live. Turns out by the letter of the rulebook it was the right call after all. The USM player who jumped was two yards off the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped, and that's why there was a flag.

Leverage and Leaping
ARTICLE 11. a. No defensive player, in an attempt to gain an advantage, may step, jump or stand on an opponent.
b. It is a foul if a defensive player who runs forward from beyond the neutral zone leaps or hurdles in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or try. It is not a foul if the player was aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.

Bogus rule, not so much bogus call, because there should have to be contact with an offensive player for that call to be made.

But there were a boatload of other bogus calls in that game even not including the leaping call.

RE: Tenn-USM, SEC Officials- Video
That call continues to bug me, so I looked it up just in case there was something I did not understand that would explain why the call was made. Yeah, right. Here's the rule.

Leverage and Leaping

ARTICLE 11. a. No defensive player, in an attempt to gain an advantage, may
step, jump or stand on an opponent.
b. It is a foul if a defensive player who runs forward from beyond the neutral
zone leaps or hurdles in an obvious attempt to block a field goal or try. It
is not a foul if the player was aligned in a stationary position within one
yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.

c. It is a foul if a defensive player who is inside the tackle box tries to block
a punt by leaving his feet in an attempt to leap directly over an opponent.
1. It is not a foul if the player tries to block the punt by jumping straight
up without attempting to leap over the opponent.

2. It is not a foul if a player attempts to leap through or over the gap
between players.
d. No defensive player, in an attempt to block, bat or catch a kick, may:
1. Step, jump or stand on a teammate.
2. Place a hand(s) on a teammate to get leverage for additional height.
3. Be picked up by a teammate, or be elevated, propelled or pushed.

Pretty straight forward stuff, huh? The statement in paragraph c1 could not be clearer.

I just have never seen such a blatant bias displayed in the conduct of an officiating crew. I say the crew because not one of them made any attempt to clarify or correct the call, especially the referee. I am still pissed, and I am not exactly a big fan of Southern Miss, but that call grates my butt. Those officials should be suspended indefinitely.

RE: Tenn-USM, SEC Officials- Video
The bolded part of section c1 did not apply to this call since it was a FG attempt and not a punt.

Two officials were telling the USM players before the play that they could not jump starting from two yards beyond the line of scrimmage where they were. The rule in section b says they have to start a yard or less from the LOS to jump and be legal. Both officials threw flags on the play and they were right, but the rule needs to be changed to add contact with an opposing player to make it a foul.
