He quit on the team he recruited in the middle of the season.

I always laugh when I think about what Danny Wuerffel said about him.

Danny threw a pick then had to walk back to his sideline, head hanging, where Spurrier was waiting. Spurrier saw how dejected he was, and said "It's not your fault - I'm the one who recruited you."

He knew he lost the fire years before, he could have just as easily resigned normally like an adult but he made it about him.

Actually from the story the SC AD tells, Spurrier wanted to retire after the prior season but he talked Spurrier into coming back with the understanding that if he again wanted to retire that Spurrier could do so at any time. And the way the SC admin & players embraced him even after his quitting, it must be pretty close to the truth.

Wow, Mark Packer actually agreed with him? That guys is a huge P5 brown noser, I'm surprised he actually thinks teams from non 'power' conferences deserve to be at the same table.

Packer said directly that the AAC had some teams that were "really good, could just about play with anybody". That's when Spurrier said there were several SEC schools that would love to have some of the AAC talent & coaches.

The irony, of course, is that Florida went to the Citrus Bowl two of the following three seasons under Spurrier.
