Childer's the guy
Carey said Childer will start at Bowling Green. I think we have a 4 year starter. He'll be good. Got an arm and can run. Shaky last week, but first start. Nerves. He'll get that long ball down.

RE: Childer's the guy
Give Carey credit for the following:
1) He made a decision and appears to be completely committed to it. We could have lost to a very average BU team, but he stuck with Childers, in spite of a poor start to the game, and the fact that he was continually missing wide open receivers.
2) He choose the best time to plat Childers; it was the weakest 3 game stretch of our schedule; the best time to gain experience.
3) He developed a game plan that played to his QB's strength. Short, high % passes, run heavy; and he still gave him plenty of chances for a home run ball; so by no means was the game plan ultra conservative.
I am beginning to think that this may have been part of the plan all along; I struggle believing that Santa's last two minutes of the SDSU game would force Carey to completely shut him down; given all the good that was shown. Carey is now back in his comfort zone, playing Huskie football. Next year with Hall in the mix and Graham fully healthy will be interesting.

I wouldn't necessarily say that, Rodney Hall is waiting in the wings.

RE: Childer's the guy
Upcoming game vs BGSU screams for Childers (not Santa) as Ohio just rushed for 340 at a clip of 7.8 a try vs the Falcon.
Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, play-action pass for TD*.
*If pass overthrown, run 9 more times and throw again if needed.
Repeat.

RE: Childer's the guy
At least we can stop speculating who will start against BG. I am glad Carey made the decision; time will tell if it is the correct decision.
I think Carey looks to the SDSU game as not only the end-zone pick, but also the earlier pick 6 by Santa resulted in a 10-14 point turnaround that cost us the game. Yes, that does overlook all that Santa did good in that game, but knowing Carey’s conservative approach I can see that as being his thinking.
Early last week after throwing Graham was sore. I have not seen anything this week; however, he was supposed to be out 2-4 weeks and we are at now at over 6 weeks. So, whatever the shoulder injury was it appears it was worse than initially thought or Graham is not coming back as expected.
It appears to me that it is now Childers job to lose. Even when Graham is 100% I don’t see Carey going with him, unless Childers played himself out of the job.

That said it is imperative to get the passing game established. You walk into Toledo with the offensive approach niu is taking right now , it will be minimum
four score differential. Every MAC game from here on out has to have partial consideration of developing an offense capable of being competitive against the Rockets. Correct me if I'm wrong but 6-2 MAC season with no championship appearance is not good enough for this program anymore

I am ok with this. Build for the future while winning games now. Just keep growing, learning, and beating Toledo!

RE: Childer's the guy
God help us, this team will struggle to score points the rest of the year unless Childers suddenly improves at throwing the football.
Hopefully his passing skills are far better than what he has shown to date. At this point I will root for his success.

The positiv with Childers is that his incompletions are not picks like with Santa

In this offense Childers will throw less picks; credit the offensive scheme for this; from what I can see nearly 65% of his passes and 80% of his completions are 10 yards or less. Santa's skills particularly his passing are not suited to this offense; Childers are. I think we need to get beyond (myself included) the Santa comparison. Santa is out of the picture. You're guy is the guy now; hopefully that works out. The one thing I hope they do (and I think they will) is fully FULLY commit to this direction; don't screw with this kid's mind. Based on the BU game they will do just that.

Disagree. Defense is stout, and is the best in MAC. No way Toledo wins by 4 TDs. Childers will improve by Toledo game. Agree with you that Carey is a Homer and needs to go.

I'm glad he's made a decision but I don't know that you could ever fully commit to someone. If we start to lose last week and don't move the ball on offense, I bet Santa is back in. Childers played ok (Hustle Belt even termed his performance as impressive) but you can't takes losses just to build experience. Of course I hope the kid works out because that means we are winning games. This will make next year interesting as well unless we start to lose qb's to other programs.

I find it strange that most of the more vocal Carey haters, are also the one's pulling for the change to Childers. Carey makes a definitive call on one of his most difficult decisions., and the Carey haters still hate Carey. Weird.

That's because I always thought Carey was a Homer from day 1, and not changing my opinion. He can not communicate effectively, which a head coach has to do. Have you ever listened to his shows with Baker. It's embarrassing.

RE: Childer's the guy
MD wants Childers to play but that just plays into Carey's conservative approach which will lead to us not scoring very many points. Even with a good defense Toledo will make some plays in the passing game just like Drew Anderson did before he got injured, and will end up scoring more than us, unless Childers somehow improves his deep passes. It took a whole year for Hare to start hitting those.

As far as Carey making the right decision to start Childers, even a blind hog roots out an acorn every now than then.

I think that it would be far easier to coach up a talented QB that can execute the full playbook to limit his mistakes than to coach up a QB that has shown no ability to complete passes downfield.
Carey is a safe player and to quote John Tortorella (the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey coach) " safe is death". This applies to football as well as hockey.
At this point I can only hope that Childers has more talent throwing the ball than he has shown so far in live game action. Perhaps he does, I hope that all of the QBs are being graded for each and every play both in practice and in live action.
This team has a lot of talent and I had begun to believe that they had a legit chance at a MAC championship. I just don't think we have a great chance of doing that when playing not to make mistakes rather than playing aggressively.

Yea I think Carey got lulled into a sense of security having beaten Kent State and then a Buffalo team that spent half the game with its 3rd string QB, with Childers. We aren't going to be beat Toledo with 14 points, and Toledo or WMU will stack the box knowing we can't beat them deep. So we won't be able to run the ball, Childers will complete a lot of short passes, and we won't score much.
