Even today, there are physically and mentally fit individuals unable to join due to age limitations, not having a high school diploma/GED, having a past felony conviction, low score on the ASVAB, insulin dependent diabetes and taking ADHD medications, etc.

Because some people think that if your qualified, willing, and able then you should have the ability to serve your county.

Sound mental health is a qualification. Believing you have some kind of calling to live as the other sex fails that qualification. We aren't talking about low level perverts that like to wear women's panties around the house. We are talking about truly phucked up people that alter their hormones and mutilate their genitals. I'd almost go a step further and ban women on hormonal birth control too. More often than not, that phucks up their mental health as well.

The problem is 99% of the time a mental disorder. There are some people who are really born "intersex" but it's very very rare.

We now treat gender dysphoira like it's a physical problem. Inject some hormones and cut something off (or put something on) and you've fixed it. But the depression and attempted suicide rate for even fully transitioned transgender people hangs around the 40% mark.

Now, any population which has a depression / suicide attempts rate like that has no place on the battlefield. 18 month+ deployments in hellish conditions breaks even mentally solid people.
