Yep.
They need those lights for all the Tuesday night November MAC-tion games (airing on ESPNU) against Buffalo or Akron that 76 fans actually show up for.
Did you ever look at the home attendance with the UC game excluded?

It's actually a good move for Miami. The students will show up for a change before heading uptown at halftime

Are you sure about that? The 3 times I've been to Yeager, I've seen very few students at the games.

Night games?
Noon games are ghost towns Most are watching the early kickoff s for OSU, Norte Dame and Michigan. Night game for a decent opponent will have a lot more on hand just for the pre-party effect before stumbling up to CJ's or Mac n Joes.

Miami certainly came ready to play in the Tuberville era. Amazingly, UC didn't and still escaped with wins those four years.
This may be their largest crowd in a long time and I hope many of us will make our way up U.S. 27 (Someone please disable the only traffic light in beautiful downtown Millville that evening).
Of course a win is a must-- even if only on local TV. But I would expect the 'Cats to come out with newfound passion and energy under CLF and keep the streak alive.

Who does UC return? We're losing our second and fifth receivers, LT, both ends, and a safety, but no depth otherwise.

We return pretty much the whole team from last year. We played a lot of young guys last year, especially on defense and at WR. We lose a third string QB (who many felt should have started), a back up running back, a couple offensive lineman and one defensive lineman.
In addition to the returning players from last year, we should get a lot of contribution from a lot of freshmen who took a redshirt year. With exception CTT felt all freshmen should sit a year to benefit them over their careers.

Most are home or in a bar watching the Big Ten school from whichever state they came grew up in or Notre Dame.

we lost three defensive guys to the NFL.
that said, the last coach was a solid recruiter, redshirted a bunch of guys, and it's telling that Fickell hasn't run many of them off so far

Did we have a good class last year? Honestly I do not remember. I thought our classes in the, thing who will not be named era, were middle of the road as compared to the rest of our conference.

Agree.
There are probably lots of worthwhile players in the bunch that are ranked lower because they're athletes or projects and not at a defined position and field-ready, but if you have to redshirt that many players in one class to have them ready to contribute that speaks to your recruiting shortcomings. UC will always have several players per year that will redshirt, but fifteen or twenty? That's essentially a one year gap in production.

It's not so much that as a very old school roster development strategy. It harkens back to yesteryear when all frosh were RS'd, regardless of talent level.
It's treating roster development as a marathon, rather than a sprint. In the end, non-P5 teams that are extremely experienced tend to do well. The idea is that at some point you'll have a squad of guys that have been in your program for a 5th year. That's an additionally year to be in S&C, and learn your systems. That can work, in theory, to nullify the talent advantages of schools that are able to recruit more elite talent.
I think 'he who shall not be named' simply overestimated his ability to stay employed. Turns out UC won't idly stand by through crapper seasons.

I remember him making comments about redshirting a lot of that last class, but if the players are better, you play them period. If they have that much talent, they are going to leave early for the draft anyways, might as well get 3 years of production out of them, rather than 2.

I don't know that that's the case. Even the best UC talent stayed full term. That's kinda the whole point. Sure, UC can find and develop talent, however the key word here is develop. We're simply not going to consistently get the type of talent (pre-CLF, at least) that's going to leave early - which in turn often means they're not the kids that are going to come in and be immediate contributors.
I think we'll find that CLF will do much the same. He's scoring better recruits, so we'll definitely see some hit the field as frosh, however - where depth allows for - we'll likely see a lot of kids RS'ing.
Ultimately, i think (insert last coach) just gambled and came up craps last year. It was apparent that last year was going to be a down year in talent, and he thought he could get through the year as is. WRONG. The talent was injured, and likely even less than estimated. Not to mention his OC stunk it up, and things were a mess. There are kids like Doaks, that are probably going to show their talent this year that he could have burned RSs for, but if you think you're safe...you just sit on your arse....i guess

Personally, I thought the way he redshirted almost all the freshmen was the one thing our former coach did right. Give the guys a year to get used to college life and, more importantly, a year with a college strength coach, and you have a much better foundation for a program.

100% agree.
I think we'll find in time that with better coaching - making that assumption - we're going to get quite a lot out of those recruits.
