UC vs Miami of Ohio football game on TV ? - kyucat - 06-03-2017 12:04 PM

Just checked the MAC 2017 TV schedule and there is no TV coverage listed for the game. Also checked the AAC ESPN TV schedule for games and the UC Miami is not listed there either. Is the game going to be on TV?
If it is not on why not. I thought it would at least be on ESPN 3. Anyone know the story?

I'm a new fan so excuse me if I don't know, but why do we play Miami (OH) - especially away? They are a bottom feeder team in the MAC and beating them won't help our schedule

Probably a case of ESPN negotiating selling TV rights (in return for a few $) to TWC Ohio (or Spectrum Sports, whatever it's called these days).

I bet the game ends up there.

Tradition... if we had gotten into the Big 12 or ACC, I believe we may have renegotiated or dropped the series. But I think they are holding onto it since we have basically no driveable away games in the AAC. Also, Miami leads the series 59-55-7 all-time... would be nice to take the lead. But as long as we are in the AAC, we don't really have a lot of leverage (or money) to not play them home and home.

That said, if the series was dropped, I wouldn't care much at all. Neither would most UC fans.

Miami wii be a significant challenge for the Cats this year as has been the case for the past several years

Maybe... But it does not change the fact it is time to move on from the series. It does UC no good to play Miami-- it does not spread our brand and does not help recruiting. What's more a loss will be detrimental on the local front.

There's no excuse to drop Miami as long as we're willing to host an FCS. I'd also like to believe our program isn't run by a bunch of chickenshits and/or hypocrites.

True. I would much rather play Miami than an FCS school. But I would like to not be so tied into this series... with only 4 non-conference games, being locked into a home-and-home with a below-average MAC school may not be a good thing. It would be different if they were having success on the level of Toledo or NIU in recent years.

If you owned KYUCAT Sports, Inc., would you buy the broadcast rights knowing that maybe 20 people will tune in?

TV is selected 13 days before game week or 7 days if its put on a hold by ESPN. Since the game is at Miami this year the MAC TV deal controls which means you are likely looking at ESPN3 or some other form of regional coverage at best.

UC-Miami is one the longstanding rivalry games in college football and usually draws a very good crowd. Since UC went to the Big East and later the American, the Bearcats have dominated the series; however, a good number of pre-season publication are picking Miami to break the streak this year.

Older Bearcat fans remember the thrill of beating Miami when Miami was actually a top 50 program and UC was still struggling to gain transaction in college football. If Miami ever returned to the point of being a top level MAC team this series would instantly become more interesting every year as threat of UC losing the victory bell would be very real.

If nobody outside of Southwest Ohio has ever heard of the series, is it really a rivalry?

Also, do you think recruits come here to play in the Victory Bell?

All MAC home games will be on ESPN3 at the minimum, although it'll probably be upgraded to TWC at least, maybe ESPN News like last year (although that was at Nippert). Some MAC home games are sold to CBS Sports but that's usually for weeknight MACtion.

Yeah, we finished 6-7 against a bad schedule last year, but the team that finished dominating an SEC school everywhere but the scoreboard was a lot different from the one that lost to Eastern Illinois in week two. We return literally everyone except our LT, both DEs, our third and fifth receivers, and a meh safety with our roster trending upward dramatically after being the worst in FBS back in 2013. Interestingly enough, we'll both have Austin Peay as a common opponent before meeting this fall, that doesn't happen very often.

I doubt the series continues past 2020. Your AD doesn't seem to be a fan of it and Fickell probably isn't hot on us after we hired Martin over him, so you'll probably look for other H-H series. I know we don't have much of a high horse to sit on, but Miami won't accept 2-1 deals or a H-H where our home games are at PBS instead of Yager. Maybe if every game is neutral at PBS that'd work even if it'd be a relatively partisan crowd against us.

I understand all the reasons why it won't happen. However, I still think it would be cool if it was at PBS every year during Oktoberfest. That could make for a fun tradition and I like having something constant on the schedule.

Would you buy rights to Duke women's softball? ESPN did.

Huh? Did he even interview for your job? All I can find on the google is that he interviewed at Pittsburgh (twice), Northern Illinois and Akron while at OSU.

I have thought this as well...

The only thing about PBS is that is really hard to get a crowd in there that feels big. Even if we brought our traditional 39k Nippert crowd and MoO brought a generous 15k, you'd still only be at 54k which still feels...anticlimactic...at PBS.

And then you have the problem with both schools losing a "home" game in terms of concessions, parking, etc... (Because you know the terms the Brown family would dictate would be that THEY keep all the concessions and parking for using their stadium.) And the ticket prices would be outrageous to cover the rental expense of the stadium, and the parking would be higher than either UC or Oxford. So, for something like this to happen, the Brown family would have to make it happen...basically THEY would have to say, "Hey! We want you guys to play in our stadium!" and then underwrite the event.

Which actually makes sense to me.... Get some people who aren't Bengal fans in to see the Stadium; maybe they decide to come back. Get lots of goodwill for the Stadium and the Brown family; PBS was sold to the city as a "public good" after all.

It's not going to happen.

RE: UC vs Miami of Ohio football game on TV ? - Bang Burger - 06-04-2017 01:12 PM

Regarding TV - Miami wants the kick-off at 3:30 because it is Homecoming; TV wants the kick-off at 7 or 7:30 pm because Ohio State is hosting Army on TV at 4:30 pm. So far no decision on kick-off or which network will carry the broadcast.

Schedule - Miami & UC are still in discussions about the future. One possibility that is being considered is a 3 game rotation, with 1 game in Oxford, 1 game at Nippert, and 1 game at Paul Brown.

Dead Rivalry - Miami will have it's most competitive team in 12 years; UC will need to bring it's "A game" to Oxford this year.

Our AD decided we didn't want him early on in the process, I looked back at Miami Hawk Talk archives and there's a dead link from Sports Illustrated plus a quoted post from coachingsearch.com (the page is updated so it doesn't have our info anymore) that indicated Fickell was interested but with no rumors after that. Some of our fans tracked Oxford airport records to make an educated guess on who we interviewed since we were so bad we didn't have any beat writers to tell us, and we saw there were two round-trip flights in one day from Columbus (the same day with flights from South Bend for almost certainly Martin) to indicate our interest in him and OSU assistant Kerry Coombs. After a week or two some national sites picked up rumors, but by that point Fickell was no longer in the running. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle in that we didn't want him and he wasn't begging to coach a winless program with some of the worst facilities in FBS at the time.

Miami should not accept 2-1 deals and UC should not even expect that to be part of the conversation. I respect Miami. It's too bad athletics up there fell off a cliff. It was a fun rivalry when I was in school.
