The year before WKU beat USF, Marshall beat UCONN, Toledo dominated ranked Temple and SDSU crushed Cincinnati.

One thing is for sure the top AAC teams get crushed in bowl games by other G5 schools. Their tops teams have yet to prove any separation when it counts on the field
You know, except in games that matter of course. Louisville, Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oklahoma, Baylor, South Carolina, Ole Miss... I think there's more but i can't remember

The AAC regression to the mean will continue this season. There's no Tom Herman, Blake Bortles, Paxton Lynch, or Matt Rhule anymore.

BTW, why is it AAC people always talk about how they just don't care about bowl games against the rest of the G5 and that's why their record is so bad, but think Florida State and South Carolina are going to be amped to play Houston and South Florida?

Paxton Lynch and Blake Bortles haven't been around for some time. Riley Ferguson is projected in way to early mock drafts as a second rounder. Several pundits mention Memphis as an Access Bowl contender...almost surreal for long time Tiger fans. Season ticket sales are triple what they were this time last year. Don't think many in the know predict Memphis regressing to their mean (would be hard to do in one season -lol), more likely they need to be looking for a new head coach if the program keeps on the current trajectory.

The whole bowl game let down theory existed way before any P5/G5 distinction began. I'd be shocked if AAC fans are proud of the bowl record. It stinks and has cost them money in the form of conference distributions (meaning they fell in ranking after bowl results were compiled). My only comment related to the subject is that unless it's an Access Bowl win, bowls don't sway perception as much as regular season games. The advent of the CFP, the weekly TV show, and their justifications carry wins forward much longer than bowl games. Maybe b/c they are stacked on top of the other or sport fatigue... I'm guessing here b/c I really don't know why they aren't given more media weight as they are the last game played for over half a year, but welcome ideas other have on the subject. After the first CFP ranking in 2015, when they spent a segment discussing Memphis possibly crashing the CFP, their media profile went up exponentially and has remained higher than prior to the move to the AAC and the advent of the CFP. WKU totally destroyed Memphis last year in their bowl game, but it doesn't seem to have negatively affected their preseason mentions this year (doesn't mean fans don't care that they lost).

I'll say this about bowls....the only reason that USF is getting all the preseason hype they are is because they beat South Carolina in that bowl game. Without that the AAC doesn't even have a ranked team at season's end. I think you underestimate the importance of the bowl games.

And if USF is the best the AAC has the league would probably still be the G5 conference but it won't be as decisive as 2015 and 2016. The SBC and CUSA both have no fewer than 3 teams that could've beaten that South Carolina team in that bowl game.

but there is Charlie Strong/Quinton Flowers and Mike Norvell/Riley Ferguson.

I'd much prefer to play Auburn, FSU, South Carolina, etc over almost any G5 (maybe BYU)

If I had to predict next season right now:

USF (10-2/6-2)
UCF (7-5/5-3)
Temple (6-6/3-5)
Cincy (5-7/3-5) [loses tie breaker to Temple]
ECU (4-8/2-6) [upsets BYU]
UConn (2-10/0-8) 'It'll get worse before it gets better'

Memphis (9-3/6-2)
Houston (8-4/6-2) [loses tie breaker to Memphis]
Tulsa (7-5/5-3)
Navy (7-5/5-3) [loses tie breaker to Tulsa]
SMU (6-6/3-5)
Tulane (2-10/0-8) 'It'll get worse before it gets better'

USF beats Memphis in the Champ game, 11-2 USF gets the Access Bowl...Memphis goes to Annapolis to play an ACC team...Houston goes to B'ham to play a SEC team...Tulsa goes to the Frisco Bowl...Navy goes to the Hawai'i Bowl...UCF goes to Boca Bowl...Temple goes to the St Pete Bowl...SMU goes to the Cure Bowl

just my guess.

Very possibly so, but I am speculating from a macro, not micro view. With the CFP, all games outside the playoff have diminished in stature within a three year time span. With more and more players opting out to minimize injury/better prepare for the draft, I only this trend increasing...affecting perception of these games.

Let's be totally honest here: Had Memphis beaten WKU, UCF beaten Arkansas St, Houston or Cincinnati beaten SDSU the last 2 bowl cycles the bowls would've mattered. There has been some hypocrisy going on with the Bowls with some AAC posters the past few years...the Bowls matter. Houston beat Florida St and that counts. SDSU beat Houston and that counts.

Of course they count. Bowl results have negatively impacted the AAC two of the three years of the CFP. However, over the same time period, the shelf life of regular season games has increased over bowl games. With the CFP rehashing previous week's results and media reports dissecting/showing video long after completion, the regular season has gained in media coverage verses one and done bowl games. The most bang for the buck (in terms of perception) has trended more and more to regular season games (outside the CFP). Perception can be changed more easily during the regular season (outside the CFP), than in bowls that are not given as much attention or discounted for whatever reason (letdown, players opting out...). Case in point, the AAC (as a whole) has done terribly in the post season, but is still reported (perception) as a top G5 conference by most outlets.

T̶r̶o̶y̶ - Picked #68

AGGIE, MY PICKS

1. Which conference will be the first to have all teams selected? MAC
I agree I think the MAC will have both Miami (Ohio),PICKED # 69 & Toledo before any other G5 conference is filled in.
ONLY ONE TO GO

2. Which conference will be the last to have all teams selected? ACC ...AAC ?
Yep....I agree AAC, I thing USF and Houston will be the last TWO (2) selected from the five conferences I think NAVY will need to have a good replacement for their QB they lost to have a great year..

3. Which team will be next to be selected? UCF
Maybe Tulsa PICKED #67 , they need a QB just like ODU. It might be us.... IMO I think UCF will be really good this year. Last year they only lost to Temple by a point and almost beat Houston They had a fantastic recruiting class for 2017, the #1 class in the AAC. They picked up one of the top freshman running backs in the country with another RB that was a 4 star. The also snagged a local QB from Norview Darriel Mack out of Norfolk. He had an outstanding Sr. year. He may red shirt. The 2017 class had 20 3 stars and a 4 star gave them a monster recruiting class.. BINGO

4 Which team will be last to be selected? Navy
USF AAC - They are returning almost every one from last years team that went 10 -3. Their only defeat in the AAC was to Temple. They also were very competitive against Florida St..

5. What will be the G5 order of the average ranks after all are selected?
AAC, C-USA, Mountain West, MAC, Sun Belt
Perfect.... AAC, C-USA, Mountain West, MAC..................SBC.

6. Does anybody care? Not really.
LOL, Care maybe not, but enjoy the off season chatter...YES. Thanks for all the work AGGIE..

I Of the remaining G5 Schools, I think @Wyoming, *Toledo or #Old Dominion may be up in the next few picks. I hope it is Wyoming. The MWC will be intriguing for the final order. San Diego State had a unbelievable 2016 going 11-3 ending the year with a win over Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl and RANKED # 25 in the final poll. They lose a lot of starters from last years team but keep their QB and a strong group from their defensive unit. Than if you look or compare Boise State, the MWC may finish ahead of CUSA slightly, all will certainly depend on the pick first of ODU and Wyoming. Than next SDSU against LA Tech and finally the placement of WKU compared to Boise. After a closer review, I do think the MWC will edge out ahead of CUSA. We will see in just a few weeks.

*Toledo
will need to replenish a strong offensive squad from last year. They return their QB but have lost some very key players from a team that did a lot of scoring (averaged about 40 points per game). They played App state really strong last year in the Camellia Bowl losing 31 -28. (Logan Woodside, Toledo's QB is OUTSTANDING
Woodside headlined Toledo’s explosive offense last season and torching opposing defenses for 4,129 yards and 45 scores. He tossed at least two touchdowns in every game and finished fourth nationally by completing 69.1 percent of his throws). He would be the reason for them to be picked higher, if Matt feels this offsets their other loses.

@ Wyoming will be stealer on defense maybe one of the best in the country, especially at the G5 ranks. However, they will be in need of some offensive weapons as they only return 6 players on the offensive side of the ball not including their QB.

# ODU, first off ODU will need to replace a QB that knew how to move the chains. The defense will be good but will need to replace some key loses from last year. ODU did rank in the top 25 in many defense categories #4 in turn over margin, # 15 fumble recoveries and in the top 50 for overall defense last year. The big question mark will remain the QB position. The new JC transfer Jordan Hoy out of Fullerton JC was outstanding in HS... Highlights.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t1dfpjNPtU He also had a very strong Freshman season at Fullerton. A 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Rockwall, Texas, Hoy completed 246 of 391 passes for 3,434 yards and a school-record 37 touchdowns against just six interceptions last fall. He also rushed for 712 yards and nine touchdowns and led the team in passing and rushing. He was named the 2016 Southern California junior college offensive player of the year. Will have 3 years of eligibility left.

Hey OldTimer, just a tidbit about Darriel Mack.

It's very likely he does not redshirt. We've had an exodus of Quarterbacks, with the advent of the Scott Frost offense (Oregon) from the GOL offense (Play Action, spread).

As of right now, we have two scholarship QBs. One is a True Sophomore, the other is a Redshirt Senior.

Darriel Mack or Noah Vedral, one of them will certainly see backup role this year and if I were a betting man I'd say it would be Mack.

Vedral is talented, but is where Milton was this time last year. He needs a year to grow I think, whereas Mack looks like he could play right now.

He had lots of accolades locally and was one of the best to come out of Norview for many years. 1987 was the last year they had a player of the year for the ALL-Tidewater selection (Norfolk, VA. Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk) an area with over 1.6 million people.. His district was very competitive and he was selected the Tidewater Player of the year and lead his team to the State 5A semi finals. He was OUTSTANDING. He will be a star for sure.

Good to hear. We've got high hopes for the kid, he'll be pushed for sure, with Milton looking to hold onto the starting position, Noah Vedral certainly being a competitor and 2 sport all star himself.

Throw in the kid we're getting this recruiting class from Michigan who looks incredible... hopefully too many QB's in the kitchen is the biggest problem we have.

65 teams in. 65 to go.

In other words, ODU is now officially a top half team (at least according to some guy who probably wears sandals year 'round).

Whoo Hoo!

I assume this Orlando guy is basing his assessment on our defensive line and our running game, both of which should be fairly good this year. Secondary is improving but still needs some polish. QB is largely unknown. Special Teams will probably be streaky, but hopefully with more consistency on XPs and field goals. Punts might be good too. I have a feeling we might pad the record with wins over down-year teams again
