RE: What now for Syracuse?
No matter the timing, as Ken mentioned, once Hopkins left Syracuse essentially had to extend Boeheim, or recruiting would be an uphill battle.

RE: What now for Syracuse?
On March 6, 2015, the NCAA suspended Boeheim for nine ACC games, took away 12 scholarships and ordered 108 wins be vacated as a result of a multiyear investigation into the university's athletic programs. Penalties also included five years of probation and the vacating of 11 football victories from the 2004-06 seasons.
The school had already self-imposed a postseason ban for its men's basketball team this season. The NCAA said the violations, which dated to 2001 and were self-reported by Syracuse, involved academic misconduct, extra benefits, failure to follow the drug-testing policy and impermissible booster activity.

could've sworn boeheim's voluntary "retirement" was proffered in order to placate the ncaa bloodhounds ...

That's probably the common wisdom, but how sure can we be that Syracuse will be an attractive destination for a promising coach? Syracuse hasn't conducted a head coaching search since Roy Danforth left in 1976. Some candidates might not have even been born then. I don't remember the circumstances about that search, but that esteemed source - Wikipedia - suggests the search came up empty leading to then-assistant Jim Boeheim getting promoted.
Could that happen again?

SU is a good school w/ a rich history and a massive fan following. It also has top-of-the-line facilities, elite conference membership (ACC in basketball), high profile OOC rivalries (UConn, Georgetown, and Villanova), and it's located next to a recruiting hot spot.
Aside from having to follow a hall of fame coach, I have a hard time seeing any argument that would lead one to think that it's not a good job.
The world has changed a lot since the mid 70's. SU is no longer a Cinderella.

I share the same sentiments as NZOrange. When Roy Danforth left SU, he left SU to coach LSU basketball. Let that sink in for a bit. Danforth himself has said that "that was the single biggest boneheaded decision ever made in college basketball."
About 2 years later the Dome was built. Lots of coaches would like to coach in front of 30,000 plus crowds playing against the likes of Duke, UNC, Uconn, Georgetown etc... I cant believe its a serious question whether or not Syracuse could attract a quality bb coach.

Quick quibble - Danforth actually left for Tulane. Hard to imagine, but I guess that was perceived as a better job at the time. Pre-Danforth, notwithstanding Dave Bing's time there, Syracuse was not even close to being a consistent winning program since the 1930's. Danforth put together 6 straight postseason appearances, capped by the 1975 Final Four. This success led to a major upgrade to the Manley Field House, turning it into one of the best home arenas in the East.

RE: What now for Syracuse?
Syracuse seems to have all the tools in place. However, that can't offset timing. Duke, UNC and Kentucky all stumbled trying to replace legendary coaches. They eventually did but not before some trying years. With today's instant access would a .400 coach K be given more time??

I guess I had LSU on the mind. You are correct. It was Tulane. I was close. Same State, LOL.

RE: What now for Syracuse?
Actually Cuse had a solid program in the late 50s (Elite 8 in '57) but fell to a nadir in the early 60s...Dave Bing and Jim Boeheim helped elevate them in the mid 60s...they took a short nose dive again until Roy Danforth elevated them. He made the NIT for the 70-71 season. Cuse hasnot had a losing season since 68-69.

IIRC, the move to Tulane included becoming AD, not just basketball coach. That may have been important to Danforth. That's rare today, but in those days a lot of coaches were also given the AD title.

And football (which is huge for late season games). The trouble is the part of the winter where they won't let you live in the Dome. I tried it once, but they wouldn't let me. Too bad, too. I could have saved a bundle on rent and tickets! :)
