UC, Xavier, and Dayton always, but at one time Miami was the class of the MAC as well. Not to mention others like IU and UK not unbelievably too far down the road, but they're not exactly under-the-radar programs.
UC, XU, Dayton, UK, Louisville, Ohio State, Butler, NKU, Wright State, Miami (all within 100 miles within Greater Cincinnati).
IU, Purdue and Akron just a little further out. We don't get the love that other regions in the country get, but we have some fine basketball region. I've always wanted an early season tournament, but egos have always prevailed and it hasn't happened.
You are absolutely right. Although as a homer, I would say the epicenter is about 100 miles to the southeast.
Using Louisville as the epicenter, within a 200 mile radius of Louisville, you can find UofL, UK, IU, Purdue, Cincinnati, Xavier, Ohio State, Dayton, NKU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and teams who do make the tournament regularly such as Western Kentucky, Murray and Morehead States.
Plus of top ten NCAA tournament markets, you will also find Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville, and Dayton
No matter what the distance, Cincinnati is closer to more quality basketball schools:
50 miles from Louisville: 1 NCAA tourney team (Lousville)
50 miles from Cincinnati: 4 NCAA tourney teams (Cincinnati, Xavier, NKU, Dayton)
100 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier
100 miles from Cincinnati: All those schools plus Dayton, OSU, and Butler
200 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, OSU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Illinois, and Tennessee
200 miles from Cincinnati: The same except swap Notre Dame for Vanderbilt
250 miles from Louisville: UofL, IU, UK, UC, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, OSU, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Tennessee, Notre Dame, and St. Louis
250 miles from Cincinnati: The same except swap St. Louis for Michigan, Pitt, West Virginia, and (just barely) Virginia Tech
