And if I were Tubby I'd send Keelon Lawson packing. Any father, but certainly if any member of the staff that says or does anything that distracts from the program or changes a player's focus from what is currently in front of him - THIS SEASON, that person clearly is not focused on or loyal to the program & should be fired. Forget that Keelon is being paid to focus on Tiger basketball, it likely damages Dedric's standing with scouts & certainly damages the Tiger team for him to be focused on what's next, essentially writing off this season at the most crucial time of the season. This leveraged relationship just is not worth the crap - and it hurts recruiting & the program that is not Lawson-centric. And BTW, I'm confident this is what Tubby is expressing in this article.
You are absolutely right! I said there is a Cancer on either the team or the staff; perhaps both. Outstanding post!
Even after Tubby basically saying he disentangle want to be here you and TT are still weaving conspiracy theories about Lawson's being cancer on team. You two (?) are moronic.
You are either a complete fool or a liar, maybe both. But I never once said the Lawson's are a cancer. For I do not believe they are. I recently met all three of the Lawson's and find them to be extremely friendly and giving of their time. I also have posted that Keelon said to the beat writer that if you haven't heard anything from me or his mother it's BS. Again you put your feet in your mouth.
The Lawson's aren't a cancer. That's just stupid.
The distraction is the media wave after the Lawson announcement, which is crazy cause he didn't even announce it. Basically, the media went on a complete freak out mode claiming that the program is over and the team is going to be horrible next year. The kids listen to these miserables. Dedric turned off his twitter this week because of it.
Dedric didn't announce it because he has class. He know's that is something that can be handle in April, not February. The Lawson's are great. KJ is going to be incredible next year for us.
We did fine this year. We are going to be better next year.
I'm staying away from the cancer-talk.
The media wave seemed partly a play by local media to get scoops and click-bait. At the same time, it also seems partly a series of intentional statements from the family. First it's KJ volunteering he doesn't have any friends on the team, during a CA interview. (Coincidentally, this was the day before the Tulsa loss which was the worst loss of the year.) Then it's the young-uns are leaving town, via Keelon telling reporters. Next is J&J saying confidential sources tell them Dedric is out of here. Finally, you have Pops Lawson on the radio saying he hates Tubby. This all happened within about a 6-week period at the end of the season during which we played a lot of bad basketball.
I hope it's just a media frenzy and not attempted manipulation. Heck, KJ says unequivocally he's back and Calkins believes he meant it.

I did think using the word "bemoans" in the CA article title was an interesting choice

RE: CA - Tigers' Tubby Smith bemoans expectations, distractions
I don't understand how most people go into a season knowing we aren't going to be very good and then get bent out of shape when we aren't very good. We've heard about local kid distractions for years now and there's probably something to it, even if it's not fully to blame for our downturn. If I were Tubby, I'd get rid of Keelon. Neither Dedric nor KJ proved themselves to be can't-miss players and I don't suspect Chandler will be, either. We can win 19 games with non-Lawson players. There are plenty of other high-level kids coming out in the next few years that we have a real shot of landing so why deal with the headache/wasted coaching spot? If Keelon wants to pimp himself out to another school that's fine.
The most concerning thing to me about the state of the team is the lack of a point guard on the roster or on the horizon. I think the team has been okay considering they don't have a ball handler or creator on the roster. If Tubby can get the pg spot figured out with Jamal and Nickelberry coming in and KJ, Martin and Markel coming back; we'll have a nice team next year. That, combined with the local talent in next year's senior class, at least gives us a realistic path to becoming good again.

Agree with much of what you said, but I think we need size 1st, then shooters, then point guards.

I think Lomax is the PG on the horizon. But he's way out there. Meanwhile, I do think Jeremiah can become a PG. He just has a lot of work to do in the offseason. Shooting, penetration. But more than any, it's decision making. He has to increase his PG IQ.
What was that simulation game Cal used to spin to the media from Israeli fighter pilots or some nonsense, to help them improve decision making?

I haven't seen anything from Martin that indicates he can run the show for a good team. Clergeot has a better shot at being serviceable in that role than martin in my opinion. I agree about Lomax. Can we suit him up early?

Please don't expect Lomax to come in as a frosh and be a D1 level PG.
He will be nice, but inconsistent, and likely not better than a senior Jeremiah Martin.

RE: CA - Tigers' Tubby Smith bemoans expectations, distractions
I didn't bring up Lomax but I think he'll be a solid college PG. You're right, we shouldn't leave ourselves in a position to rely on him as a freshman. Martin doesn't have the PG skills I want and hasn't shown me any reason to think he's developing them. He doesn't have the handles to deal with pressure and I hasn't shown good decision making when pressured. He gets to the rim occasionally but that's about it. He will need to become a lot more consistent overall and steadier as a ball handler. Hopefully he does but I haven't seen enough growth thus far to make me think he will.

The expectations are to not get blown out in back to back games to end the season by SMU and UCF?

But they did by 41 & 32, pitiful! No heart, no effort. Opposite for ECU, they gave SMU all they wanted today & more, great effort even in a loss.

You're right. I think it's obvious two bad game plans caused both those losses. Our talented, courageous players were left defenseless. By the way, that last word was the only serious part of the post.
