Sure it wasn't Wofford? Heard they had an all-star team.

RE: Official SoCon Tournament Thread (non-ETSU games)
This is from a post on another message board:

"I read from a Charleston reporter that due to the way the SoCons rules are, if UNCG is playing ETSU or Furman on Monday that the loser is NOT guaranteed the NIT bid. The NCAA will only allow 1 champion to be guaranteed an NIT bid and the SoCon chose not to do that.

However if UNCG is playing anyone else on Monday they will be guaranteed an NIT bid if they lose. Conversely if ETSU or Furman play on Monday against anyone but UNCG then they too will get an NIT bid if they lose.

Its an interesting way to do it since the NCAA won't allow a conference to protect everyone and ensure at least one of their co conference champs gets an NIT bid. Ideally one of UNCG, ETSU, and Furman would win the SoCon and the other that went the furthest in the tournament would get an NIT bid but the NCAA said no.

Same with Big South, ideally if Winthrop were to win on Sunday UNCA would get the auto NIT bid since they were co champs. But NCAA said no and Big South chose to protect 1 seed Winthrop with auto NIT should they need it"

Sounds like that's the same Jeff Hartsell description, no?

From what I gathered from his tweets is that since UNC-G and ETSU shared the regular season championship and are playing for the tournament title, there is no auto-NIT bid that gets rewarded to a regular season champ who does not win the tournament. Since 1 regular season champs is now guaranteed to win the tournament, no auto-NIT bid.

This is just what I read. The SoCon should probably tweet out something official.

That is exactly what Jeff was saying. However, the clarification that I got from the conference (or that was given to someone I know from the conference) was that it's worded that if the co-champs made it to the same round the highest seeded team would get the auto bid. Now that ETSU and UNCG have reached that level, UNCG is assured of the auto bid to NIT if they do not win tonight. However, ETSU will not get the auto bid if they lose. Thus, they have only protected one team and not both. Again, I think ETSU gets an invite to the NIT even if they lose, but it's not an auto. And again, based on the cluster this thing has become, I could still be wrong even after being told I was right.

So, the best thing for the SoCon is for ETSU to win and get the NCAA bid and the Spartans can have the NIT auto-bid.

I'm down with it.

I'm sure you are.

Yeah, I know it's not the prize either of our teams want. But I got that info for our podcast last Thursday to only find our it wasn't quite right. Wanted to try to clarify.

On the bright side, I think either of these team could legitimately win games in the tournament with the right draw.

Spartans can legitimately win NIT games, and Bucs can win in NCAA, I agree for sure.
