Would Calipari have let him just go? I think he restricted where kids could transfer that left his program ...
What does this have to do with Calipari?
Why blame Pastner for the Nichols family and the lawyer ... He just did the same thing that Cal or any other coach would have done ... No more, no less .... Don't let the Josh bias get in the way with Nichols here ... Nichols created his own mess ... and continued to wallow in it at UVA ...
The way I understand it (from Parrish and Calkins talking about this at the time) is that trying to restrict him from Virginia went farther than was usual. Typical restrictions are conference members, non-conference rivals, and teams on the schedule the following year. Pastner tried to say that since we might play Virginia in a preseason tournament that Nichols should be restricted (although his real reason is because he thought, probably rightly, that Virginia was tampering). But that was farther than coaches usually go.
At any rate, coaches/schools should always just let a player go. If the player balks the coach is typically the one that ends up with egg on their face.
Thanks...most everyone knows the story, but some are intent on bashing a kid instead of the real problem.

Yeah, there is another solution.. This situation could and would have been worked internally, but they decided to hire Corey B Trots and go nuclear.
What I see is that he left the university late and left the school in a bind. I'm not a Pastner hater, but he did what he needed to do. Cooler heads would have eventually prevailed and he would have got his release.
He basically gave Memphis a big FU on the way out the door. Hopefully, he and his family learned a lesson about burning bridges...
Karma...

However you see it, amigo.
Josh tried to hold Austin hostage and the kid and his family did not play around. Some folks seem to have a problem with that.
Maybe other kids will get the message now and not let a coach hold them hostage...like Bo Ryan putting like 60 schools on the restricted transfer list for one kid - absurd
Whatever Calipari does is what he does. If Calipari tried to restrict my kid, I'd hire whoever the Nichols hired.
NEXT
ANY CHANCE HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT ACTUALLY HELP A.N.

RE: Thoughts on an AN Return ...
And if I remember correctly, besides waving one of his large middle fingers at the school on the way out - didn't he also pile on in an interview for the UVA school paper about his last school "doing things on the cheap"?
Kid needs to get his ish together, unless he's going to live off daddy the rest of his life. Besides - how much eligibility can he have left? One year? Big whoop!
Like others have said; I think he is enjoying life too much to want to buckle down and commit to working on his game.
