RE: Power Rankings - Week 10
ODU backers seem to take how others rank them quite seriously (lol). And I keep reading over and over again about how you keep reminding everyone about beating us. Let me first congratulate you on that win. Much has changed since then with our team.
As you all know, we have a new staff this year, but we also have nearly 20 new starters under that new staff, and started off the year 1-3, with our only win in those first 4 games under our new staff and new lineup coming over a very weak FCS team. Growing pains.
Since then, our team has slowly started to gel, and we've won 4 of 5, with 3 of those 4 wins coming against quality teams in USM, UNT, and MTSU. We did have a burp in our progress when we lost in 5 overtimes to UTEP, but UTEP had 2 weeks to prepare for that game, and the strange thing about our series with them is that the visiting team has won all four meetings so far. The loss hurt us and is a thorn in our side right now as we're trying to be bowl-eligible, but we've responded well these last 2 weeks.
I think it's fair to say though that you guys have had a soft schedule in comparison. Only 3 of the 9 opponents you've faced this year have winning records. You lost two of those three on the road (by 24 and 35 points) and won the other against us by 14 at home. Six of our 9 games have been against teams with winning records. We lost the first three very early in the season, and have won the last three. And we still have La Tech next week, Texas A&M the week after, and then Charlotte, which would make our number of opponents over .500 at least eight for the year.
You guys can say your team has changed a lot since the beginning of the year also, but I think that your game against Southern Miss next week will be an interesting test of that claim, as it'll be only the 2nd time in the last 6 weeks you've faced someone over .500. Then you get to close out the year against the Florida schools who have a combined record of 5-14.
All said, for now, I do think you're entitled to be ranked above us because of that win early in the year, but our schedules are certainly very different, and as said, much has changed since.
Btw, I was VERY critical of our new staff early in the year with what I saw as a lack of progress, not knowing that as we put our new system in place, we also had nearly 20 new starters. I'm officially now on board and would relish a chance to play anyone we faced early on now, just for comparison's sake.
