Maybe we could grow into the 59k and change size stadium after 3 or 4 more years of winning?

Realistically, we could but it would take over a decade of sustained football success and at least another home run HC hire.

I personally don't think so with the conference were in. Winning is great, but the schedule has A LOT to do with large crowds

Obviously you are correct. Schedule is the top issue with attendance. We have shown we can draw 40K+ in a first game against just about anyone. But after that we need top games to draw great crowds. When we have a winning season, like the last several we could consistently draw 50K+ for virtually all the OOC games if they were against SEC or top level P5 schools. If we are winning, we can likely come close with mid-level P5 but we will always be pushing to get 35K-40K for any other games (FCS, D-2, Sunbelt, CUSA, MAC, etc). And that with a winning season. Especially in a 60K stadium with a lot of available discount tickets where there is no concern about a sellout. We need a better OC schedule - and it wouldn't hurt to beef up the AAC with the best 4 schools from the MWC to add some interest. When we get in the B12, SEC, ACC we can schedule weak sisters like Baylor schedules because the conference games are the attraction.

I'd agree with that. A program like Memphis needs to win AND face attractive competition(Ole Miss, UCLA, etc.) to draw crowds of 50K plus.

The Navy game last year was clearly an exception. That crowd turned out to see an 8-0 team coming off a huge win against OM two weeks prior.

If the Tigers continue to make bowl games and remain in the AAC, you can expect to average ~40K. That's not bad.

Bingo! Put us in the Big12 or ACC (and winning 8-10 games per year) and the discussion will change to...our stadium is too small.

I'm not even sure if that would help except for 1 or 2 games

Are we gonna get 45K for Iowa St or Texas Tech? Wake? NC State?

I think so...if we are winning 8-10 games per year. If we had similar success to TCU or Boise, along with P5 affiliation, then absolutely yes.

I mean, we are averaging near 40K in the AAC with opponents like Tulane, Temple, etc.

nope, we'd see any increase for OU, UT, and OSU. The others wouldn't add more than a few thousand.

Besides OU, OSU, & Texas...KSU, ISU, & WVU fans travel in droves.

All those games would be sellouts (or near), even if we didn't add one more Tiger fan in the building.

If we became TCU-like competitive, there'd be mass numbers of Memphians shedding their Vol & Black Bear gear and showing up to the LB acting like they've been there all along.

don't count on the traveling fans. TCU couldn't sell out with Oklahoma in town 2 weeks ago so the effect can't be that much. I do think being in the Big 12 would increase our average attendance into the mid 40s though with a chance to sell out when those big 3 come to town and/or we are in conference championship contention with good weather.

Not everything adheres to logic, either.

The week before the Navy game last year - the first home game since upsetting Ole Miss - some 30K came to see 7-0 Memphis v. Tulane in perfectly fine weather.

Probably true. At the same time, you'd see season tix increase to lock-in the few big games. That would drive up the tix sold number, even if they stay home for ISU. It would also drive up the average number by guaranteeing those couple of 50ish crowds every year.

Last year, we averaged 43k. This year, I'm guessing 40k. Those are leading G5 numbers. I'd say we'd solidly be upper 40's in a P5 - 50ish in a good year. Averaging a sellout at 59k - we still got work to do.
