1.5 million seems like a stretch - maybe all the way to Jackson or something.
Years ago when I inquired the metropolitan area was 1.3. The city limits contained a tad over 700k if I'm not mistaken. So no stretching was needed.
Right. City limits. 700K.
Metro area sounds more like Shelby County as well.
Doesn't fit his agenda. He thinks all 1.3 million should be
A. Sports fans
B. College football fans
C. University of Memphis fans
If they are none of the above they are pieces of crap
Not sure how you derived all of this garbage out of my post but knock yourself out champ.

Look up what metropolitan area is. And it's what all cities use to describe their areas. Populations. I think.
A metropolitan area, sometimes referred to as a metro area or just metro, is a region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing
Very nebulous language.
Did your lawyer write that?

So you and your boyfriend can dog Memphis coaches , etc all day long but others can't be upset or concerned with a real and proven fact? Got ya. I'll leave you two alone now. Have a great day
Link to where I've "dogged" any coach that didn't deserve it. And if you are talking about that recruiting thread I didn't dog anyone but posters who are criticizing other fans , which is exactly what you are doing here. Facts ? I just gave you the facts. You and a few others here want to be "big state u". I'm hear to say that it's not ever going to happen. Us getting 35K to a football game against a not so great opponent is great in my book. Sorry if you don't get that. Have a nice lunch
Again your opinion is they deserved it but our opinions are not allowed? Gotcha.
But I do agree. I don't think this city will ever support a University that strives to be in the big boy club. Pretty sure that was my point. Sorry you don't get that.
I just think you're arguing a kind of faulty point.
35K is pretty good in the scheme of things college football-wise.
I mean PITT averaged 49K last year. ECU 43K. Maryland 44K. Virginia 43K, Illinois 41K.
Not sure how much more big boy we can be playing in a non power league.
The stadium is just too big in reality.

So we lost to Mississippi. So the F what.
We are a dang good team and we are good enough to seriously compete to win the AAC which every football analyst says is by far the best non P5 conference.
This is why I HATE playing SEC teams. Anytime we lose our Fair Weather fans bolt to the EXIT SIGNS
Our goal every year is to win our conference championship. Doesn't matter what conference we are in. JUST WIN
We have to get our minds right and be the best damn non P5 team in the country. But that's not going to happen by losing faith when we lose to an SEC TEAM
I implore our fans to STAND UP and bring as many people as possible this Thursday night. We are on the national stage and it's a great oppty to keep showing the college football world that we belong.
Only Alabama put up more yards against the Miss defense then we did. And OM buys their players. We do things the right way and hung in with them till the end.
We are a very good football team and our real fans can not give up. We all need to make sure to bring friends to compensate for the Fair Weather loss
AHEM

RE: SCREW THIS TALK ABOUT HAVING 30-35k FANS THURSDAY
there has been a lot of talk in this thread and threats like it through the years.
What I have not seen is one person ever come up and say hey I was not going to the game but now that I think about it I change my mind since I've been challenged.
we are a growing Fanbase but still growing... good thing is that there is room to grow and plenty of people to get on board, I welcome everyone of them that wants to come on board whenever they come aboard even if it's right before we win a championship.
p4p is a good fan that has to travel many miles to see the Tigers,

Exactly. I don't understand people who are angry about attendance. I get it if you love the Memphis Tigers and you wish that everyone else did too and that there would be 50K fans at every game. But why get angry about it? Who are you angry at? People that don't care enough to go to the games? Or people who have other obligations?
You'll be much happier if you just focus on what you can control and enjoy watching the Tigers play.
If you can't be happy without 50K fans or more in the stadium, then you do have other options: become an OM or UT fan. Or Alabama. Otherwise, accept reality.
Most sane people make their decision to go to a game/not go based on two primary factors: 1) Will it be worth my time/money to go (i.e. will I have fun watching the game, tailgating, spending time with friends, etc.) or, 2) Am I able to go (i.e. do I have other obligations such as kids, school/work, etc.)
There are some Friday Night Light crazies out there who deviate from this decision making process and will go no matter how bad a team is or no matter what other responsibilities they should be tending to because they have some warped belief that they owe it to the team no matter the circumstances. That's when you've lost control of your life. You go because you enjoy it and because you are able to go. If not, then don't.
You also go if you love your team, your school, and your city, and if you know a player(s) on the team. And that does not make you insane. You also enjoy ALL the nice things about a game, not only the game, but your friends, the weather, the Tiger Walk, band, and cheerleaders. And you do not ever neglect your other "obligations", job, children, school, family, health, friends. And that's my 2 cents for the day. Go Tigers!

They're brainwashed beyond belief.
The tickets are cheaper than cheaper, the parking is easy, our stadium is really nice, we are now competitive, have good coaching and fast, exciting plays, and out of 1.5 million, we pray for 20,000-30,000.
Memphians are Fair Weather Fans, full of excuses, too lazy to get off the couch and see what is happening in their city, set in their ways, and slug-ly. Not to mention, brain dead. I tell my friends all the time they are missing the biggest party in town on Game Days. It is what it is.

(10-04-2016 12:47 PM)Collegiate Black Man Wrote: College sports in a metropolitan area are not the huge draws like they are in small college towns . They compete with too many other things, and the diversity of the population to expect a college football team to draw close to 5% of the population (about 65 K - a Liberty Bowl sellout) for a home game on a Thursday night against Temple or anyone else for that matter. To me, this is unrealistic, given that many people with the disposable income to go to such an event probably have collegiate ties to other schools in the region, or weren't college football fans even as students. Even as alumni of UofM, a commuter school, school pride and such aren't probably at the fever pitch it would be in a small, rural college town like Tuscaloosa or Knoxville.
I saw this also as a fatal flaw in the thinking that investing in college football would generate an invite to a P5 conference. Memphis is not a small college town with nothing else to do but do things at the University. I'm not saying the university isn't a great asset and a source of pride for the city. But to think that a really sizeable portion of the population is clamoring for a "win- at-all-cost" college football team is overly exaggerated at best, and might even be a little delusional.
Hey, I wish every home game would sellout, and I was impressed by the team that I saw Saturday night. But 30K on a Thursday night against Temple is about what we should expect. And that is a good crowd, at least considering the social and economic context of Memphis and the school.
This whole city went crazy over a basketball team that played within two minutes of a NC. So, I don't underestimate what community pride can rise to here in certain situations. Being a Memphian can transcend what college you went to (Vandy here), or that you never went to college, what your income is, what your social status is, how long you have lived here, and the University of MEMPHIS IS Memphis.
