RE: Tubby has to be fibbing re: mile run
My 21-year old son joined the Army this summer. Before he reported he started running. He's an athlete but not a D1 athlete. First time out he ran in the 6:30 range. After about a month, he got his best time at 5:15. Not sure why anyone thinks "pretty much" all of our D1 basketball players could not do this and the coach would lie about it - 6 year old OU numbers notwithstanding.

RE: Tubby has to be fibbing re: mile run
lol. Seems to me that there are different minds on this forum competing for one perceived brass ring
Some minds comb through 'testimony' in search of anything...no matter how small...that will cast doubt. Others look at a bigger picture but then little stuff piles up and causes damage. Then there are the ones who emotionalize a lot of their thinking.
Being able to hop from one kind of mindset to another works too.
Ok...maybe I made no point...but wgas..I'm not hanging here to make points. lol
Just watching the wheels go round and round

Try to run a mile flat out, and you are going to be walking by lap 2.
Lol I used to run a 50 second quarter so according tovhim i would have had a shot at the record.
Uhh, guys? I believe I said "almost?" Remember, I'm the guy who ran it in 5:30, so think I would know what it feels like.
Maybe it's just semantics here, but I don't think you can say anything even close to it being "almost" a flat-out sprint where running the mile is concerned.
Okay, okay.... I got it.... It is a full out RUN from the starting line. That's really the way to put it. If you are not "on your horse" from the start, you will not make it in time. It's not a sprint, no, you're right. But my point was, there is no time to jog at the front end.
No question about that.....and, fwiw, I'd LOVE to feel what it's like to do a 5:30 mile!

Not that hard...we had to do this in high school. Pretty easy for a 165 pound pg that didn't smoke or drink...

I hear you, but I can't see EVERYONE breaking 6.
Rychoek? Dedric?
This was the OU team results from 2009:
Cade Davis: 5:29
Ryan Randolph: 5:33
T.J. Franklin: 5:45
Tony Crocker: 5:49
Beau Gerber: 5:53
Ray Willis: 5:53
Willie Warren: 6:20
Barry Honoré: 6:21
Steven Pledger: 6:22
Tommy Mason-Griffin: 6:25
Ryan Wright: 6:25
Andrew Fitzgerald: 6:26
Tiny Gallon: 6:56
Kyle Hardrick: 7:10
Orlando Allen: 7:34
UNC only had one guy break 5:30 a couple years ago. He's saying ALL our guards broke 5:30.
Not a big deal, just thought it was odd to pronounce that feat.
I guess it would be SUPER impressive if true, just based on a quick look at UNC and OU's results.
When I played baseball at Memphis you couldn't start practice until you completed a mile in under 6:30...most of us did it fairly easily on the first day.
I gotta call b.s. on that for the mere fact it makes no sense. Why would a baseball coach ever need a player to run a 6:30 mile? You telling me catchers are busting out 6:30's? First basemen need to run (assuming the get on base a couple times) about 0.25 miles a game. Yet they are going to run a mile in that time?
This is a sample workout for baseball, which logically uses short-burst exercises, not gauging someone on a mile.
Our tailgate is in Tiger Lane, you are more than welcome to come by and introduce yourself and my account can be verified by other members of the team. PM me your number and I'll text you how to find us before the Tulsa game. Look forward to meeting you.
If you are flat out calling me a liar, I'll look the other way. But I was:
a) a scholarship baseball player at Memphis, a member of the M Club
b) Did complete the mile in under 6:30 every year and were required to do it.
It was standard fitness test, and more than just the baseball team had to complete it.
We racin'?
Coach K. didn't fail me for missing a half semester of classes. Dobut he's gonna bench some Doughboy 1st baseman or catcher for not hitting some mark that has absolutely no meaning in baseball.

A lady I worked with, her son was an elite marathoner, finished 4th in Boston 2 years in a row, so he was amazingly fast. He was like a giant ... 6'3".

Quote:The rules of physics say that distance cycling and distance running are for small people. Rowing and swimming are for people who are big. The physics is so exact that when Dr. Secher tried to predict how fast competitive rowers could go, based only on their sizes and the weights of their boats, he was accurate to within 1 percent.
...
Distance running is different. Tall people naturally have longer strides, but stride length, it turns out, does not determine speed. Running requires that you lift your body off the ground with each step, propelling yourself forward. The more you weigh, the harder you have to work to lift your body and the slower you will be.
The best runners are small and light, with slim legs. “If you have large legs, you have to move a big load,” Dr. Secher said. “The smaller you are, the better you are.”
Yeah, but the mile is that nebulous in-between thingy where it is almost a flat-out sprint - but how long can you last at a full sprint - kinda thing.
The mile is not even close to a flat out sprint. The 400M is not even a flat out sprint and Olympians pace themselves to some degree at that distance.

Is this the high school embellishment?
The Tennessee state RECORD for the quarter is 48 seconds, so unless you were like top 3 in the state in the 400, this is another high school glory day misremember.

I liked that headline "High School embellishment. I liked the fact that while some fast times were mentioned I was wondering why my 400 times were no where close. Then I remembered that when I ran track we were still running on cinder tracks with metal spikes that were about an inch long. That was in the late fifties and early sixties in high school (CBC) and at Memphis State also (as best as I remember)

The state record for 400 is 46 something and most state champions have run 48s at sometime in their career.

If the team starts shooting with the rifle team then we know Tubby just misunderstood Memphians preference for run and gun teams.
