NCAA Basketball tournament- Greensboro site
So where do folks think the old Greensboro site will be going?
Saw this just now from Andy Katz:
Furman AD Mike Buddie tells ESPN the school and Southern Conference are bidding to host the 2017 NCAA men's first and second round in Greenville, S.C., (capacity 15,951), replacing Greensboro, NC. Buddie said as soon as the confederate flag came down last year they made a decision to bid for a future site. Now that the flag is down from the state Capitol, South Carolina schools can host NCAA championship events. "We anticipated this may happen in NC (with HB2 law leading to NCAA withdrawal) and we're ready to host in grand fashion if selected," said Buddie.
also this:
Source says the capacity of the 8,722-seat Palestra and the infrastructure for an 8-team event makes it a non-starter to land NCAA men's first and second round in 2017.

Columbia, SC and Greenville, SC are the two frontrunners. Both have tremendous arenas and tons of bars/restaurants/hotels in walking distance
The NCAA kind of owes it to the state, IMO at least.

Greenville or Columbia sounds fine to me. Gets SC back into the NCAA hosting game, as well.

This is a regional site. Boston is not in the same region of the country as Greensboro.

more:
South Carolina confirms to ESPN that the Gamecocks will also put in a bid to host the 2017 NCAA men's tournament first and second round.
Providence College confirms it has also bid on the 2017 NCAA men's basketball tournament first and second rounds now that it's available. PC hosted at the Dunkin Donuts Center last March.

If it doesn't, then the closest site for either the first or second week of the tourney for teams from this area is Indianapolis (first week) or New York (regionals). And next year, you have the same issue, with Charlotte scheduled to host the first round games. Both Greenville and Columbia could get picked.

Interesting, I guess. Probably more the seating than the infrastructure, unless that means "oh no, we can't stuff people and sell all of our crap in this place." You couldn't find a more prime location for such a venue in the northeast, except for MSG. Septa, Amtrak, 95, the 76's...right by Penn and Drexel with all of their hotels, with Center City about ten blocks away.
Additionally, even though it's the home of one team, about six of them consider it a home away from home venue...maybe not the best choice given the volume of Philly schools who make the tournament and some of those who just barely get in. As well as those Patsy and nearby Ivy schools who know it well, who might be in the play-in or getting one of those death games as a 15 or 14-seed.
It would be nice if PA could get it...either PPL in Allentown, or Giant in Hershey.

If it goes to SC, it will be to Greenville. Which makes sense. It has the most and cheapest airfare options. It has WAY more hotels near the venue than Columbia. And Main Street will be a treat ... even if this means some more damned Yankees and ******* Ohioans discover the area and invariably relocate to it and then start voting to destroy it.

I do agree that South Carolina should be the beneficiary of this considering they have not hosted in a long time.
Why not move Greensboro's to Greenville and Charlotte's to Columbia....just go ahead and do it now.

This is the NCAA. It will go wherever the drive is easiest from Chapel Hill and Durham.

Don't be shocked if it invariably goes to Dayton.
*Immediately ducks for cover.

Louisville put a bid in as well, I believe. I can see the Yum Center being a strong contender. Recently hosted a regional.

Same thing as Dayton. Too close to Indianapolis.

Only Providence, Greenville and Columbia have confirmed their interests so far. Louisville has not submitted their bid.

If those are the bids get your hotel in Greenville now if you were planning on going to Greensboro.

Columbia's bid is unconfirmed. Ray Tanner said there may be a conflict with the women's tournament, and since South Carolina's women's team is one of the top teams in country, they may get a host spot in Columbia.
If a sub-regional was played in Columbia, the Gamecocks would have to play in another city.
