Our record is where we all thought it would be. But sometimes there is more to it than the simply looking at the win/loss record. The complaint for me continues to be, from my perspective, is the lack of progress. We are still losing the same ways.

We were outscored 80 to 29 in the Ap State/NC State series this year. Last year, we were outscored 87 to 14. We gave up 936 yards in those two games, and we gave up 885 this year.

I understand that you could paint numbers in any way you want, but to me, our defense simply hasn't improved enough to be competitive. Our defense "looks" better, but the results are not there. Combined with the fact that our offense has regressed, the room for error from our defense shrunk and they have not answered the bell.

So yes, this team has the record we anticipated, but they have not shown the signs of improvement that BW talks about all spring and summer.

RE: UTSA Discussion
I would argue the offense has not answered the bell. At any rate, from now til the end of the season, we get to play teams in arguabley the worst FBS conference in the country. One quite a few upper level FCS teams would thrive in. Let's see how we make out the rest of the way. I'm looking for progress in -conference first, then OOC.

RE: UTSA Discussion
We also played NC State and App State on the road this year versus at home. So, maybe there wasn't as much of a progress as we hoped, but certainly some progress. NC State also seemed to coast through the game last year, but this year were fired up over the loss to ECu and schemed up some unique plays.

How has our offense regressed from last year? Even ignoring the Hampton game, the offense was much better vs. NC State and App State this year over last year.

RE: UTSA Discussion
It seems to me the first three games have gone just about as was expected. This game will let us know whether or not we are going to compete in conference play. I think it well be every bit as close a game as last year, and I think in the end, we post the W. Sturm is pretty darn solid at QB, and they will score some points, but so will we. Final score -- ODU 28 UTSA 24.

Player ratings comparison at the time of recruitment, excluding Freshmen.
IMO, there is not a significant differential here.

ODU
25 two stars
17 three stars

UTSA
27 two stars
18 three stars
2 four stars

I searched all over ODU's website as well as the athletics website and I could find no mention of tailgate times. The parade is scheduled to begin at 10:30. Normal starting time for tailgating would be 11:30.

Per this poll, we are ranked ahead of 5 teams left on our schedule. If we win them all, that means bowl eligibility.

Just read an article on http://www.cbssports.com, where a writer rates the "Bottom 25" in FBS football. Not surprisingly, ODU and few other C-USA teams are on this dubious list.

RE: UTSA Discussion
Here is how I see it. UTSA is not a great team by any stretch of the imagination, but they have shown just enough signs of life to think perhaps they are better than last year. They are the type team we absolutely have to beat if we want at least a .500 season. If we lose, we are simply not a very good CUSA team this year and can probably put away bowl hopes. Being a bad CUSA team makes us a very bad team, period.
If ever we've needed an offense to start to jell, it's now.

Until I see us compete with a real FBS team, we do not have to win, I will not consider us FBS. I have yet to see any step up in talent since the first three years we started playing football. I still think in some ways those early teams could run this team off the field.

Offensively, you are correct. But this is the best defense that we've ever had by a good margin. If only we could get it together on both sides of the ball.

Anyone concerned about the effect that this lousy weather may be having on practices this week?
