The UVA dumpsterfire
What are realistic expectations for UVA this season? Surely Bronco gets the team looking slightly better...

I think it must be short for "uvula"
Honestly, I don't see what "UVa" has to do with college football.

RE: The UVA dumpsterfire
From CBS Sports College Football Bottom 25 rankings:
Who is the worst team in America (based on the CBS formula)?
Quote:1. Virginia (0-1): Safe to say the honeymoon period for Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia is already over. Because things aren't going to get any easier going on the road to face Oregon this week.
Best Win: None | Worst Loss: 37-20 vs. Richmond
Average Score: 20-37 | This Week: at Oregon
That's not to say there isn't some MAC or Sun Belt or FCS team out there that the Hoos couldn't beat... but among the Power 5 teams, the Cavaliers have pretty much hit rock bottom.
Will Mendenhall even stick around long enough to put out the dumpster fire... much less clean up the garbage?

Ignore what I said. There is no losing streak. We're doing just fine. All is well in Chestnut Hill.

Not giving the Cavs an excuse, but Richmond could be in the FCS title hunt this year.

So did William & Mary and Colgate, the two teams that NC State and Syracuse beat. In fact, Colgate returned 18 starters from last year that went deep into the fcs playoffs last season. Not piling on UVA, but I think it has more to do with the players getting used to a new system with a new coach. Theres some talent on that team.

Do you follow FCS football? Richmond is a much different animal at that level than either of the two you stated. W&M is solid but not really a "title contender". Richmond is ranked #2 right now and I think W&M is 13?

No I dont follow fcs at all, unless its a team that Syracuse plays, which is not much. But I do know that Colgate was preseason ranked #16 and went as deep into the playoffs last season as Richmond. Colgate returned 18 starters from that team. Not sure how many starters return from Richmond. But I did know that Richmond was a good team pretty much on an annual basis. Pretty sure that Colgate is very good at that level this year too.

RE: The UVA dumpsterfire
Go back and look at Dick Crum's first year at UNC. Half the kids hated his guts and they laid down to his old school Miami of Ohio 3-7. Even today, when you look it up, UNC tends to list the game as a loss to Miami as if it was Miami, Fla.
Crum was culturally different from Dooley. Mendenhall will have that same problem and it's not just Mormanism, it's that Rocky Mountain cultural thing that is very, very difficult to explain, except to say they are not like us in the Southeast or the Northeast. A lot of folks want to ignore culture, but it can really matter.

Colgate is decent but IMO got lucky in the playoffs last year. They actually got farther than W&M but they also didn't meet Richmond in the Playoffs. Im not making an excuse for UVA but saying Richmond is comparable to those two would be like saying Clemson and FSU are the same as TCU and Texas A&M.

The Spiders are better than Bill and Mary. We played Richmond a few years ago and we were not mentally prepared and they damn near beat us. For UVa or VT, a game with JMU, W&M, ODU, and Richmond is dangerous. I could be mis-remembing but London's recruiting was good but thin. He would get 2-3 4+ and 5 star kids but the rest of the recruits were average for P-5 and they had to stay eligible at UVa. And football players suffered for the **** that went on with the UVa lacrosse boy and girl - meaning behave or get kicked out.
When UNC replaced Dooley with Crum, they went from a good ole boy, high emotion Southerner to a quiet mid-western robot. I can't remember the last successful Rocky Mountain guy to coach in the southeast, others may know.

I wouldnt go that far, just looking at Colgate (634-478) compared to Richmond, all time, (533-635) Colgate has been much better. Looking at the last 5 years the two teams have both won 36 games. The last 10 years, Richmond won 83 games and a championship while, Colgate has only won 67. But since 2000 Colgate has won 120 games while Richmond has won 100 games. You dont want to go any further than that as its not pretty for Richmond. Today, I give the edge to Richmond, but I wouldt say the difference is as large as you say. We will know by the end of the season as to which team is better.

You cant say a certain team is better today, than another, because your team struggled with that team a few years ago.

The worst thing about this loss for the ACC is the fact that later on this season UVA is going to beat several teams in conference play. #goacc
