RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
You know, I understand the argument about our schedule. The teams we've played have not had their seasons so far go as planned. I get that. But at some point, you know, we'd have to be given the benefit of the doubt, don't you think? What's it going to take? We haven't had a losing season since '09. We've had bowl wins, beaten ranked teams, taken down P5 teams…I mean it's not like that's a secret either. Not saying the entire panel should be behind us, but I think it's pretty pathetic that what our program has accomplished in recent years, and this year, amounts to one freakin' vote after 4 virtually perfect weeks this season.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
Beating BYU won't even help us much because of their perceived ranking.
Because of our schedule, we need to be the biggest WMU fans until we roll over there and beat them.

BYU has lost 3 road by a total of 7 points.
Won@Arizona(2-2, lost in OT to Washington Huskies),18-16
Lost@#18 Utah(4-0) 19-20
Lost to UCLA(2-2,#24 CBS Poll, lost Texas A&M and Stanford), 14-17
Lost @WVU(3-0) 32-35(game in Landover, MD)

BYU is better than Illinois or NW. This one will help UT if they can win.
BYU is a 4.5 point favorite.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
We lose and we have a lot to overcome to try to get noticed with not that much left to do it with. Wins over EMU, BGSU, CMU, OU, Akron, NIU, BSU: 03-yawn

We win and we are 4-0 with a win over BYU. That won't get us in the Top 25 right away, but it will get some attention. Then if we continue to run the table they won't be able to ignore us.

BYU is a 4.5 point favorite.

If the Rockets win, then BYU will be 1-4; probably the best 1 win team in the country, but nevertheless still 1-4.

IMHO The Rockets initially got a little early attention by man-handling stAte, the defending Sun Belt champs, but in subsequent weeks, stAte has proved that was no no big deal this year and UT's credit for that win has accordingly decreased significantly----so with a bye week and without any notable win in their resume they simply fell off the pollsters' radar screen.

At this point a UT loss will certainly dash hopes of a top 25 rating anytime soon, but win over BYU will not provide much of a boost either. To be rated this year the Rockets will have to keep winning and slowly move up by attrition. They probably need to get to 7-0 or 8-0 to get over the hump as they will not have a signature win to give them a boost such as the Arkansas game provided last year.

Last year after the first three games the year the Rockets had a very doable path to the access bowl, but that is not in the cards for this year. However, a MACC is a real possibility this year now that "Mr. November" has moved on to greener pastures (that is, green as in greenbacks) and NIU has completely fallen apart.

I could be wrong and I don't want to jinks anything but I don't think Candle is the type to choke away pivotal games in November---but we will see.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
No, the Rockets are not getting any votes in either poll - strangely though, Wyoming, Tulsa and Appalachian State are.

However, UT has moved up to 29 in the composite computer rankings. Those same rankings have WMU at #8.

The rest of the MAC, not so good. CMU is next at 64. Buffalo has the distinction of being dead last. At least the MAC is still ranked ahead of the Sun Belt and seemingly imploding Conference USA.

Northwestern is doing just fine.
And factor in the typical SHOULD HAVE beaten the MAC team on schedule and their record would look great.

Didn't beat BYU, and nobody else cares much about who we have beaten. Only shot now is to run the table, or at least not lose until WMU game, hope that they are close to the top 10 themselves by then, and at least give them a really good game and then maybe we sneak in at 25 depending on how some P5 teams are doing.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
Yep, you need to beat a P5 team, no matter how good they are. 5-2 MTSU also got 3 votes in the coaches poll after barely beating now struggling 2-5 Missouri. A good win for them, no doubt, but they allowed 629 yards and 36 first downs in the process. Their losses are to 4-4 Vandy and 5-3 WKU.

Our close call win against our lowly rival didn't help our cause either. We just need to keep winning if we want top 25 recognition...polls don't really matter, yet. If we keep winning, we will eventually get there...proabably best not to have a target on our back anyhow!

Not that my recall works all that well but I don't recall any team having a season like BYU. They should get votes, just because.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
the polls are very subjective. Western held at #20 in one poll and fell in the other after beating a 5-2 EMU team by 14 points. Wyoming, whom EMU beat is receiving votes at 5-2. Toledo at 6-1 is not.

Ohio St has beaten 2 good teams and has a loss. They are #6.

Florida St and Tennessee, both 2 loss teams, did not play and moved up in the polls.

Boise played that BYU team at home on the blue turf and won by 1 point on a blocked fg. BYU was playing without their star rb. Boise moved up in the polls.

Michigan moved up off a blowout home win over the same Illinois team WMU blew out on the road.

NW is the only Big Ten team with 1 or less conference losses not ranked, largely on the basis of their perceived bad losses to WMU and Ill St. Two of NW 3 losses are to undefeated teams.

Washington St is tied at 4-0 with #4 Washington for the best record in the PAC12. They are not ranked due to perceived bad losses to Boise and E. Washington -who are a combined 13-1- by an average of 3 points.

Troy is 6-1 with their only loss in the final minute at #3 Clemson. They have 6 total votes in both the AP and coaches polls.

Last year, the playoff selection committee did a much fairer job of ranking the teams than the AP or coaches. Hopefully, this year they will do the same. I don't think the Rockets are a clear top 25 team but we should certainly be considered based one record, victory margin, and recent history. WMU is playing lights out and seems to have found a ceiling at #20 despite their play and undefeated record. The committee's job is to transcend these things.

RE: Rockets in the Polls 2016
WMU is up to #14 in the latest AP poll & will move up after tonight's win. I'm jealous. They're #21 in the CFP rankings.

Here's what I'm not getting...the following schools are receiving votes in either the AP, Coaches, or both of the polls.

San Diego St. (8-1, blowout loss to 4-5 South Alabama)
Troy (7-1)
Houston (7-2, blowout loss to SMU, loss to Navy)
Tulsa (7-2, blowout loss to O$U, loss to Houston)
South Florida (7-2, blowout losses to FSU & Temple)
Navy (6-2)
Wyoming (7-2, loss to EMU, blowout loss to Nebraska)
Appalachian State (7-2)
Louisiana Tech (they have 3 losses!)

Meanwhile, Toledo finished 11-2 last season and are off to a 7-2 start this year with respectable losses to BYU & OU. Yet, we're not getting a single vote in any of the polls. What gives?

That loss to Ohio was an embarrassment--far from respectable. Toledo gets no votes because we don't close the deal, but instead stumble year after year at home in a game we should win.
