Still a chance we're the missing "mystery school" in that list?

Even if you think you have zero chance, why wouldn't Rice present? Northern Illinois is presenting for crying out loud.

Nope ... the list is now at 17 (see my post in the other thread) with the addition of Arkansas St.
And to respond to Mademen ... I have no idea.

Because we're already in

So, we have performed so well, in football in particular (since that's what this is all about) over the past decade that Arkansas State is looked at more favorably than us at this point? (along with the other 16 schools.) Unprecedented, historic....AAUGH!
...and we're also afraid of big, bad, powerhouse WKU. Unbelievable.

Because Arkansas State is wasting time and money in a fruitless endeavor does NOT mean they are viewed more favorably than Rice. There is no logical pathway to that

Agree. We have no logical path to Big 12 (yet), so being 8th or 14th out of 17 does nothing. My sincere hope is that instead we are putting on a full court press to be in AAC if UH is called up or to the Mountain West if BYU is passed over and they look to reunite with them and add a Texas school.

I understand that is the logical answer here, after reading the posts in the other thread. But the initial reaction of fans who do no 'do the math' of the situation with respect to Rice probably sees it the other way. The average college football fan is unaware of so much of what is going on and has gone on here at Rice. If they see a list of schools invited to present to Big XII, ridiculous as some of those schools actual chances are, and then someone asks them "what about Rice?" their reaction is probably not as nuanced as we might hope.
But I agree, we have a better chance at stepping up to AAC or MWC than Big XII right now. I hope we do actually make that move when the chips fall and I do hope it's the AAC and not MWC. Although, it would make visiting Vegas more appealing if Rice was in town playing UNLV.

RE: 17 schools presenting to the B12
Let's not forget this is a 'anonymously sourced' report on the 17 schools from ESPN to begin with and there is no decision to expand. Could choose to wait a year.
Also according to Dallas News, could only be 14 and the 14 was from those 'known to be interested' If it was 17, Dallas reporter selected a different couple names (Fresno, UNLV) as well as part of the 17 vs. what ESPN originally broke as the story. Thus, seems like lots speculation vs. facts.
The fact is that we know JK knows Bowlsby well. If he wanted a meeting to present his case, he could easily get a meeting or may have already done so. Who knows but getting in front of the right audience is definitely not the issue for Rice.

RE: 17 schools presenting to the B12
A lot of it is an optics thing. Having our name in that ESPN article would be a big deal and would signal we're putting forth an effort to get in the Big 12. Hell, Tulane had a whole article on ESPN about how they might be considered for the Big 12. Does anyone think 12 of those teams have a snowball's chance in hell of making into the Big 12? No, but at least they're putting forth the time, effort and money to make a demonstrated public effort that they are serious about their athletic program. So far, our public efforts have consisted of nine tweets from JK that came well after schools had already made public statements or had their names in several articles on expansion. If we can't afford the time and money to put a decent presentation together to both the Big 12 and potentially the AAC, our financial situation is even sadder than I thought.

Other ADs know Bowlsby well. This article shows that Troy Dannen at Tulane considers Bowlsby a mentor was even recommended by Bowlsby for the Tulane job. Tulane is presenting, so clearly Tulane believed a more formal meeting was necessary.

RE: 17 schools presenting to the B12
Let's say you're at a party and you see a pretty girl. You decide you're definitely interested in her, and you think there's a good chance she may also be interested in you. You begin talking to her, getting to know her. The conversation is promising: you have some common aspects, you seem to be getting along well.
Then, out of nowhere, a world-famous supermodel walks into the room. All guys' eyes turn toward her. A number of the guys--let's just say 17 of them--rush forward and form a crowd around her, buying her drinks, chatting her up.
Let's assume you know with metaphysical certitude that you have no chance with the supermodel.
Do you join the throng anyway and publicly show your interest, knowing that you are probably sending a bad message to the girl you were originally getting along with?
This has nothing to do with Rice. Just asking for a friend . . .

Sure it doesn't... LOL...
Only problem I have with going after the XII is that it's dead meat after 2025. OU and Okie State to SEC, Texas and Kansas to B1G. What's left is basically on a par with AAC and MWC. So if we can get into one of AAC or MWC, we could come out relatively well.
To continue your analogy (with apologies for sexist implications, but I'm not thinking quickly enough to get around them right now). You sell your soul to the devil to land the supermodel, then get back to your room and find out she's really a boy.
And as far as the girl you were getting along with, we don't have one of those right now.

69 made me chuckle with the "she's really a boy" line. As for the pretty girl we're getting along with, I meant that to be analogous to our possible discussions with the AAC. I think if we're in the middle of trying to court a place in the AAC, a public declaration of interest in the Big 12 may be counterproductive to that courtship.
SMU, UH, and the other current AAC schools already have a spot in the AAC, so they're not trying to court the AAC. They don't have anything to lose. We, however, might.
Just all speculation, of course.

I don't think it's speculation that we're engaged in ongoing discussions with both the AAC and MWC. JK has repeatedly given very strong indications that we were doing so.

My only point is that I'm not sure the XII is worth the risk in any event. I'd take a place in the AAC or MWC in a heartbeat which is what I thought you were suggesting.
I was poking fun at those wanting to go to the XII, although I think I'm glad they want to.

You do realize it would be at least a $20 million/year bump to athletics for the next 9 years right? That would double our current spending on athletics...
