The Mullet touches upon one of old 70s's sore spots.
How is it that UNLV, IUPUI, UMKC, UTEP, UCLA, et al, get listed by their preferred brands, yet we don't?
For that matter, why does ESPN, for instance, call the University of Texas at El Paso "UTEP" instead of "UT - El Paso" , while at the same they call The University of Texas at Arlington "UT - Arlington"? Why does UNC Charlotte get referred to as "Charlotte" instead of UNC Charlotte, while UNCW is referred to as UNC Wilmington?
I'll tell you why. Because those schools insist on being called that. And if someone in the media calls them something else, they pick up he phone and politely call them out on it.
It would be a simple matter to get a free intern, give him some college credit for working in the Sports Information Office and get him or her to do the same thing to every website/media outlet that uses a name for our school other than the one which we prefer to be called.
For some reason UNCW has never understood the importance of branding. Shoulders get shrugged when people point this stuff out to them...then they cant understand why we keep getting called "UNC at Wilmington" or "NC-Wilmington" or "UNC- Wilm." or some other bush league name.
