Regardless of his great pick here, I do think Phil has the best preseason reviews of any out there. Just seems to do a better job of researching the teams. He has the only magazine I buy.

Looks around for App and GS fans to piss all over this thread... doesn't see any... it's called respect.

My dad and I are the same way; once we picked up his, there was no reason to get the others. (Although my dad breaks down and buys the others if he sees them before Phil's because he needs the fix.) I could see how some people might prefer the more streamlined look of some of the others vs. the I-hack-away-in-my-basement-yearround-on-this look of Phil's, but I kind of like the low-fi feel.

I do get a little tired of how much the magazine emphasizes how great it is, but it's packed with so much stuff that it's hard to argue.

Joey Jones said recently that Phil calls him personally and they speak an hour or more about the team. He never hears from any of the others. When it comes to most G5 previews, those others are just putting together what any of us with internet access could do. Steele and his staff actually research every single FBS school.

He does that for every coach before he writes the previews, tries to spend an hour or half hour on the phone with the coach getting the ins and outs before he does his own research.

That's compared to Scout who didn't even know who our QB was...yeesh.

First three games are huge Toledo and USU are bowl teams and top four in their conferences.
Auburn is beatable and a must win to get a shot at the Access Bowl.

Most Improved Teams (Nationally)
3. UL Lafayette

Some Quotes

"[App St] is arguably the most talented team in the Sun Belt"

"[Ark State] could be a surprise contender for the Group of 5 NY Day bowl bid"

"I can tell you this, UL has made my coveted Most Improved list on page 38 and that means a return to their winning ways and a bowl game!"

"You might want to check page 38 and see if [Troy] has made my Most Improved List"

(regarding Texas State) "it will be an accomplishment just to top last year's 3 win total"

My comments

Interesting that he rated Ark. State #2 at the QB position but his top 4 QBs are Lamb, Upshaw, Silvers, and Linehan.

I don't believe that that Texas State is as talent-decrepit as he makes them out to be.

If there are 16 linebackers in the conference better than Georgia Southern's Ironhead Gallon I'm a Victoria's Secret model.

Our secondary may not be overly great but it won't be considered the 9th best by seasons end.

A-State's WRs will be better than 5th. Speed thrills. Size kills. Paschal, Echols-Luper, Sanders, Murray . . . lookout!

On paper 9th is about right for App State WR's. We lost a ton of experience, but nobody in that group could match the athleticism, stretch the field or run away from DB's like these guys can. They are green, but man are they talented. By mid year this bunch ought to be something special to watch.
