Looks like the logo for some high school that's the result of merging two former rival high schools.

It's a grade school mascot that went corporate. Essentially merge the USPS and Burlington Northern logos. Guess that's what one gets when you use a Manhattan advertising and logo firm.

RoughRiders awesome nickname fighting birds or whatever not so good.
Roughriders was voted out on the last ballot. An image of a fighting hawk made it's way around social media and swayed a lot of people to vote for the Fighting Hawks name. It had some of the same look as the Fighting Sioux logo, winning over voters.

We also lost the interlocking ND yesterday, which was a shock to everyone. I guess the president thought the best way forward to lose the past.

Yeah, many students thought for sure that would be our logo if they voted Fighting Hawk.

Looks like it should be a North Texas logo. Why not just use the interlocking ND?

Isn't that copyrighted?

USE OF ANY NOTRE DAME TRADEMARKS ON MERCHANDISE OR IN RELATION TO GOODS AND SERVICES REQUIRES THE EXPRESS PERMISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME. THIS APPLIES TO ALL STUDENTS, ALUMNI, STAFF, FACULTY, MANUFACTURERS, RETAILERS, AND CUSTOMERS.
What is a trademark?
“A trademark or service mark includes any word, name, symbol, device, or any combination, used or intended to be used to identify and distinguish the goods/services of one seller or provider from those of others” (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office). The University owns a variety of symbols, insignias, slogans, mottos, emblems, seals, and words which have been in use for many years. Notre Dame has a long-standing policy of protecting the symbols that are associated with its name and its reputation as one of the finest universities in the country. Because registered trademarks and service marks are valuable assets, they must be used correctly to avoid loss or dilution in the marketplace.

To view the University’s official logos and trademarks, see the Notre Dame Logo Sheet. If you need a higher resolution version of the logo sheet, please contact us directly.

Many of Notre Dame’s trademarks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If a trademark bears the , then it is a federally registered trademark. If a trademark bears the , then it is not federally registered but is still a recognized University trademark. Use of the proper trademark designation symbols in connection with the goods and services associated with the University will assist in effectively protecting the rights that the University has developed in its marks.

North Dakota used the interlocking ND first but didn't trademark it, which was an egregious mistake.

There is already pressure to use a Ben Brien designed logo, who designed the Sioux logo which was the most popular hockey jersey in North America according to a Hockey News vote. Ben is an Ojibwe tribal member and creates art that has multiple meanings incorporated into his logos.

Hockey fans are especially disappointed. The new logo will be on football helmets this seanson.

In regards to "all the hub-bub" now ... meh.

I'm sure some people were mad when Grand Forks Central high school had to change its logo. Time will pass, people will move on, people will pass away. A couple generations from now, this logo is all anyone will remember.

As a graduate of Grand Forks Central (Redskins) and UND, losing the Sioux name was overwhelming more PC and undemocratic, as it was designated as an honor for an ethnic group, not as a stereotypical cartoon. I actually agreed with dropping the Redskins name.

The Spirit Lake Sioux Reservation agreed, because they voted overwhelming to approve the UND Sioux name in perpetuity. The Standing Rock Reservation didn't even allow a vote on it, but it's mostly in South Dakota. Kind of like residents of Ohio voting on if Michigan should maintain the Wolverines.

All Indian reservation HS's in North Dakota have Indian nicknames, even though all the students aren't ethnically tribal.

The Objibwe, Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa tribes made the most fervent noise against the Sioux name.

RE: New logo for North Dakota
When you get another "adjective hawks" name no one should be surprised by a mediocre logo. (I was very loud in my opinion that the state nickname, Rough Riders, should be the choice.)

At least it's not a full-blown cartoon bird with teeth and biceps.

Actually, knowing where my expectations were (very, very low) after that nickname, the logo actually did exceed the expectations.

It has taken a day of looking at it, but it isn't as bad as yesterday. I figured it would take time to grow on me. I still wish they hadn't killed the interlocking ND though.

I don't think it's bad but it isn't good either. The worst thing is that the logo lacks any detail and seems too "smooth" and "modern".

NoDak,

Both reservations is what the NCAA required. Perhaps an impossible task ... perhaps an unfair task, but that's what it was.

The reason given was that the last logo had too much detail and they wanted to keep it simple. The interim president, who is done next week, was involved in corporate branding in a previous job. So we went from a great logo with lots of detail to a logo with little detail.

That's too bad. Hopefully it grows on everyone. It doesn't have to have a lot of detail but something with a little character and detail. The new one doesn't even look like you can make a mascot.
