New logo for North Dakota
A few years back North Dakota was forced to give up the Fighting Sioux name and logo. Last year the name Fighting Hawks was chosen. Yesterday a new logo was rolled out. What do you think?

Looks like it should be a North Texas logo. Why not just use the interlocking ND?

It makes me think they'll be acquired by Wells Fargo or Bank of America in a few years

Why couldn't they just adopt the state nickname, RoughRider, and be like a normal Midwestern flagship University. PC at its finest.

RE: New logo for North Dakota
I was rooting against Fighting Hawks. Now they're just another of many, many DI schools that have bird mascots.

But, the vote has been cast. They went for the least offensive (ie, "safest") play.

It's too bad they couldn't just stay as "North Dakota". But the settlement forbid that. I think the settlement also required that it develop a new, unique mascot and logo. Not sure if that would've forbid using the interlocking ND, but that probably would've deemphasized the new mascot too much and besides everyone knows that's Notre Dame's logo (don't care if UND used it first).

Roughriders was voted out on the last ballot. An image of a fighting hawk made it's way around social media and swayed a lot of people to vote for the Fighting Hawks name. It had some of the same look as the Fighting Sioux logo, winning over voters.

We also lost the interlocking ND yesterday, which was a shock to everyone. I guess the president thought the best way forward to lose the past.

The Interlocking ND mark must always be used in conjunction with another University of North Dakota trademark as illustrated with these examples

RE: New logo for North Dakota
Agree that the new logo and nickname is lacking in originality.

Now if they could have shown the Hawks fighting something or at least prepared to fight, that would have been interesting.

But what exactly is a fighting hawk anyway?

But I guess the Iowa Hawkeyes have the same problem, what exactly is a Hawkeye and how do you show a Hawkeye on a logo?

Guess that explains how Iowa ended up with a 1980's version of a tiger hawk logo. But at least Iowa's tiger hawk is somewhat unique and has its own identity. Who knows, maybe one day the Hawkeye name will be branded as offensive too and Iowa will have to shorten it's nickname to just plain Hawks.

RE: New logo for North Dakota
I wonder if some UND alumni/fans are fuming over this.

Clearly a bait n' switch, with the proposed fighting hawk logo looking very much like the fighting sioux logo, then getting switched to this generic, plain logo, and losing the secondary logo of the ND.

nokota,

I think that style sheet is old. That was when UND didn't have a new nickname, logo, mascot yet, and was just going by North Dakota.

My guess is that sheet will be updated to just use the new logos, plus the UND flame word mark for official university communications (and getting rid of the sioux head).

They should probably come out to their parents first.
