Pretty sure Rivals had 'em both 3's.
The issue is, if you have a coach who has proven he can win with 3* players, why would you complain when he signs a 3* player his first year when you didn't complain about the last coach signing a top 5 recruiting class his first year and losing to SMU, Marshall, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP, and East Carolina with them? Do you really think we're not in an improved situation?
He will be able to recruit to Memphis. Just relax and enjoy it. It will be better than it has been. Coaching matters a lot -- even more than recruiting.

A lot of this is simply wishful thinking at this point. Nothing wrong with that, per se, but I'd like to see the proof first. Also, exactly what has Smith "won" with three star recruits? This ain't Minnesota and TTech, simply putting together more wins than losses isn't a success here.

Like I said, Dozier was a 4*.
I'm not going to cite a particular ranking and number without verifying it.

Yeah, Rob was top 100 in every ranking if I remember correctly. Also, I'd forgotten about Ricky Sanchez.

Crazy that Ricky ended up being the 35th pick in the 2005 draft.

You're right, he was a 4-star by the time he actually got here. When he committed, he and Dorsey were both 3-stars.
https://memphis.n.rivals.com/commitments...tball/2004
But kudos to Dozier for improving during that extra year after high school at Laurinburg. And thanks for making my point. Just because someone is rated as a 3-star as a senior in high school doesn't mean he can't get better with a little work and coaching -- just like Dozier and Dorsey did.

I suspect we're in agreement that Tubby's performance at his last two gigs won't cut it here. But I don't believe either of those places, despite the fact they're both in better conferences, offers the recruiting possibilities Memphis does for several reasons.
So, the reason for my wishful thinking (and yes, that's exactly what it is) is that I'm reasonably confident that a competent coach can recruit a better level of player here than the same coach at a Minnesota or a Texas Tech (or a UMass, for that matter.)
Like you said, the proof is in the pudding. The pudding needs at least a season to make, though.

Since he is not following Cal it is clear to Orlando that he will be given a lot more leeway than the previous coach. He is not going to be judged on what Cal did, but on what the previous coach has done.
It will be at least 2020 before he is judged on what he himself has done instead of being compared to what the previous coach has done.
The last four years of Cal is no longer the measuring stick for Tiger basketball coaches.
BTW just for your information NASCAR is one of my least favorite series these days. I see Brian France as a poor excuse for a leader compared to his father and grandfather.

You mean like Wayne Yates having a higher winning percentage than Finch. Yet Finch given 11 years and Yates only 5. Why? Because Yates followed Bartow and was measured up against what Bartow produced.
Finch came in after a scandal and was given a free pass for many years.
This is why EVERY established coach offered the job after Cal left, turned down the job. NO ONE wanted to follow Cal because they knew no matter what you do it will be a no win situation.
Orlando is not following those final four years of Cal and does not have to measure up to that period.
As for making sense, your inability to comprehend basic logic is not my concern.

Funny that you brought up Wayne Yates. He and Opie's coaching tenures here are eerily similar. Except Yates was fired after ONE bad year not two and Opie got an extra year because of his ridiculous contract.
And plenty of coaches wanted the job when Cal left. Keith has told us a thousand times that Pearl was waiting on a Cal from RC that never came. Scott Drew wanted the job until Calkins stupid column.
Look I don't know if Tubby is going to turn this around or not. I'm concerned about his desire to recruit. But he's 10 times the coach Clownshow Pastner is.
