The Best Times of AAC
Man, I remember back when ECU got in the BIG East.
Learning about all the schools here, Getting ready for the Name, and then the Conference Symbol.
Having to wait that first year was so long, but then Navy was going to come in and I could look forward to that.
I actually started to care about basetball and going to the games. I didn't follow the 64 basketball tournament, but now damn. I have TEAMS to root for even if they aren't mine that I care about.
I am so anxious about the impending doom that this conference is going to get torn to shreds in the next couple of years. How the hell does this NIU poster so excited about joining? I almost want to invite NIU because he loves this conference as much as me, but its all pointless. Why is there 130 pages of Southern Miss!!! (It's even larger than the ECU to the SEC post on the SEC Page.)
This whole csnbbs thing is locking out the g5 teams from the sEC board soon, and the bias is really going to start.
I don't see Purple and Gold skies anymore or blue skies. It's just darkness. I am taking this whole thing rough because what we have now I can be proud when I go in to work when all the duke unc and state fans at my office put my team down. I wear my purple on Fridays, but I just don't get it anymore.
Good Luck Memphis, my home state of Connecticut, and Cincy <-- which I hate somewhat because I am a Steelers fan.
If I could chain our school to anyone's Fate it is with Houston, but then again I know PAC will pick you up.
Sorry for rambling but I say this all to please not put our conference down over the next few months. This was good times.

RE: The Best Times of AAC
The underlying notion is something that I just don't get.. The AAC doomsday
I hear this message everywhere.. From other G5 "they are the best now but when they get raided it will be a lateral move or we will go back to being the best"
In the AAC with posters like yours of "I was just starting to enjoy the AAC to bad it will implode"
I never got the notion that when we get raided we are going to have a huge fall
1) we are most losing 2 teams in the next 15 years
2) we are a parity league and not top heavy
There is no combination of 2 teams in this league that losing them would cause a death blow..
Name the 2 teams you want think the big 12 will take .. Then list the remaining 10, you'll see that league would likely still be the top G5, with the largest budgets and best recruiting league
The outcomes of big 12 expansions:
1) We stay at 10 and become a more intimate league where we all become rivals with each other ..and it gives a better chance to create cool rivalries like ECU/Navy or UCF/Houston who are in opposite divisions now
2) if the big 12 expands and it's not byu, the byu p5 dreams dies along with it, it might be the push we need to create a byu/MWC expansion
3) some team in the G5 has a Boise/NIU run and potentially in a major market and has decent attendance and we might actually strengthen the league (a lot of c-USA teams are extremely raw but some have potential)
4) we add usm out of history and rivalry .. Or add army umass (obviously with stipulations) for tv and rivalries
None of these are the worst thing in the world .. And the league would still prosper

RE: The Best Times of AAC
The best thing that could possibly happen to the AAC is if it can stay together with its current 12 team football for its next TV contract.
The next best thing is if the AAC only lost 1 school. That wouldn't be too damaging to the AAC.
B12 (Cincinnati, Colorado St)
AAC (Air Force)
Air Force would fill the value gap nicely for the AAC. That almost guarantees no drop off in TV deal.
The AAC losing 2 schools would damage its value, especially in hoops where it looks like a tweener power conference. Having a championship game with 10 with 2 divisions of 5 means you play every school round robin on a 9 game conference schedule. That may be more stupid in reality than it sounds in theory. May make good sense to just reload back to 12.
B12 (Cincinnati, Memphis)
AAC (BYU, Colorado State)
The fear then may be if the AAC lost Cincinnati, Memphis and UConn. That would be all she wrote for the basketball conference. It would be hard to find a quality 10th at as a replacement in that scenario. Then the conference is basically CUSA 2.0.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I think there is a pretty decent chance that we could lose more than 2. If you just sit back and look at the third tier rights picture in the Big-12 and the situation with the LHN, its almost going to be necessary to add 4 teams just to have enough 3rd tier inventory to get a Big-12 Network (converted from the LHN) rolling.
Now if BYU is one of the teams, it would help, because worse case scenario---we could add Wichita as a non-football member (to help replenish some basketball depth--plus we will need a baseball team) and then stand pat at 9 football playing members. Nine would actually work quite well for us in football. We could play a round robin, hold a CCG, and still maintain an 8 game conference schedule.
But the harsh reality is that the Big12 is not going to deal from the bottom of the deck. The 1, 2, 3, or 4 teams they grab will be among our stronger programs. That was the strength of the conference. We really dont have any marque football names---but we have solid programs in depth. So in any given year, at least 2-4 of those programs are going to be very good. We had 4 ranked teams last year---that's what depth looks like.

No, it would just turn back into CUSA, who would raid the Mac. Or maybe the AAC takes a Mac team. Who knows? But it isn't going to die, as in go out of business.

The AAC will be fine. IMHO, you're worrying about nothing. Somebody might get an invite to the Big XII in the next couple weeks/months/years, but the sun will still rise in the east and set in the west. Your life will go on almost unchanged. You should still wear your purple to work every Friday and be proud to have gone to ECU.

AAC can get down to 8 teams and survive. Easily. Several CUSA schools will still want to join.

I can almost guarantee they only take 2
They aren't expanding for strength but simply for true divisions and a a potential tv network
They openly say not a single team available is good enough, but they might do what is necessary to even the playing field and get them to 12..
If be shocked to see them add 4 teams they openly consider subpar when they say they only potentially need 2
The revenue distribution is only confirmed to increase to 12 (nothing shown for 14) and the playoff distribution is confirmed to not increase at all from today.. They are guaranteed to lose some money no matter who they add and the more teams the smaller the pie
The big 12 network according to the person lobbying will only bring an additional 4 mil per team... They won't do anything unnecessary to get content for the network
The LHN is for 1 team and air 247.. The LHN will merge into the big 12 network.. If they can find content for 1 team they can find content for 12 teams .. Without paying 75mil per year extra for inventory 3rd tier content

Watch the team you love flounder in the MAC and you'll get the desire to see your team get the hell out to the better conference

Just know that NIU has served as a model for a fellow directional school in south central Kentucky, by charting the course. ECU too,for sure, as well as USF and UCF obviously. All excellent institutions and teams to study and try to emulate. The cardinal directions, bro.

Now if BYU is one of the teams, it would help, because worse case scenario---we could add Wichita as a non-football member (to help replenish some basketball depth--pus we will need a baseball team) and then stand pat at 9 football playing members.
If they did take 4---I wonder if the best option at that point is a semi-merger with the Mountain West. Take the top 8 from the MW. There's your tweener conference. Eight game schedule. Round robin in your division and one crossover. Basketball would be formidable--and there would be an open slot in east for Wichita. Again, play a home and home in your division (14 games) and 4 crossovers to complete an 18 game conference basketball schedule. Non-revenue sports just play within division except for tournaments and occasional crossover games.

RE: The Best Times of AAC
Ok ,first of all Temple and SMU are great BB programs. I don't see how people forget that. Second if expansion happens and right now that's a huge if the next step is for the AAC to expand to 14 . Take a program from the east coast and three from the west (Col St. Air force," BYU, or UNLV') . Yes I am aware of the travel crap but here is the truth the line has been drawn ,get with it or get hit with it. The best chance these schools have to stay relevant is to play in the best competitive league they can. Depending on if Air force would play their Olympic sports in conference you add Wichita and one other top basketball program. You can call the conference what ever you want but you make it head and shoulders above everybody else. I could be wrong but the way I see it there is only going to be room for one tweener conf.

The next best thing is if the AAC only lost 1 school. That wouldn't be too damaging to the AAC.
We all would agree that would be best for AAC. That being said if you are on of the 4 to 6 schools everyone mentions, the best thing is AAC does ok and you are in a P5 and care less.
