RE: Champlin: Steve Lavin in the mix for UAB head basketball coaching position
From where we are now I don't think so.
Would be rebuilding for 2 to 3 years & probably doing it with some new recruiters.
2 to 3 years of missing out on state prospects.

You asked what McGrath would offer, not what he would inherit.

It's Ehsan or nothing for you, we get it. You are Big Dee-like in your single-minded dedication to one idea.

Why exactly would we be rebuilding?

For starters, Ehsan would go to Stanford or possibly Auburn.
The 2 signees we had are on the verge of heading elsewhere.
Some of the players we have would announce they are leaving by the end of next week.

RE: Champlin: Steve Lavin in the mix for UAB head basketball coaching position
I don't see the benefit of hiring McGrath, or any assistant for that matter, over Ehsan. The exception of course would be if we hired someone like McGrath and Rob agreed to stay on as an associate head coach, which isn't going to happen.
That's not to say McGrath or a number of other assistants wouldn't be good coaches, I just think it may be possible that we'd lose a little in the short term. If it's someone other than Ehsan I think it'd have to be a current head coach at a smaller program that is trending upward, i.e. Chris Beard before he got hired at UNLV. The only name I've heard mentioned that fits in this category is Steve Forbes. Maybe we can get King Rice or Bryce Drew...haha.
None of this is to say it's Ehsan or bust. This is just my opinion. We could hire Steve Lavin or the UNF guy and they may take us to a Final 4. Who knows.

Agree with a lot of this. Don't believe any outside coach could take us to a Final Four though. We were clicking on all cylinders last year & were forced to win the tournament to even make the big dance.

Haase is keeping an open spot for Ehsan.
Nate Darling mentioned opening up his recruitment again (depending on who is selected)
Imagine Ehsan recruited Javien Williams.
Some of the upcoming juniors on the team would more than likely head elsewhere.
Norton probably would stay but Lee & Cokley might look elsewhere.
Nothing is known, just gut feeling on what I have heard from some long time people in UAB administration (or formerly)

That seems like an unwarranted comment.. Aside from the BEST RECORD IN UAB HISTORY, how would you define last year ?

I think we are all speculating since none of us are insiders.
Had Person been chosen as head coach Pearl would have hired Ehsan & doubled his salary.
We would have gotten creamed in recruiting the next 2 to 3 years if Ehsan accepted the position.
Ask yourself if the average fan would be wowed by Lavin or Driscoll.

I'm sorry, but what proof do we have that Ehsan will succeed? This is coming from someone with no connections to the program and lives several hundred miles away. I understand he was respected as an assistant and would help keep the players together, but what else does he bring to the table? He could keep the players, bomb as a coach, and we would still be in a bad position in a couple years.

That may be true...but the "average" fan probably doesn't even know who Ehsan is or that he coached for under Haase. The "average" fan might not even be aware that Haase isn't the coach at UAB anymore.

& I believe going back to the North Carolina well might bite us this time.
I believe we were very fortunate to not be impacted by the scandal going on at North Carolina.
If you think Haase or McGrath weren't aware & weren't at least a little remotely involved in this, dream on.
