Nick is an all-time great Bearcat with lots of NBA cache. Don't know if it's an NCAA or University rule--or not a rule at all, but my understanding has always been that the head coach must have at least a bachelor's degree. Can anyone share more on that? Obviously, it screens out lots of great players with coaching skill and ability.

Does he not have a degree?

Based on the story at the below link from GoBearcats, he might have one from Texas Southern by now but I couldn't find anything confirming...

I am not a fan of ex-NBA guys and alums coming in to coach college hoops without significant college hoops experience. the college game is a whole different ball of wax. Different rules and regs., recruiting at this level is an art, and unless a guy has served as a college assistant for a while to learn these complicated ropes, I'd avoid ex-players/NBA guys.

Agreed. I would prefer someone with College HC experience. I would consider Fife or Capel because both have had HC experience before and are still fairly young.

A lot of times, AD's go back to their past to bring in a coach. What about Tad Boyle? He has been very successful out at Colorado. He was a Bohn hire. Looks like he is making just shy of $1.5M/year out in Bolder.

I have no doubt Kevin Ollie got some calls after a national title. UConn doesnt have the greatest arena or in the best conference.

Everyone on that list just seems like a 3-5 year coach, if he is successful he is here 3 years and gone, if he isnt 5 years and gone. Thats certainly sad compared to having a guy wanted to be here for life if given resources

Then again, maybe we need some fresh air into program, would certainly put an end to any Bob/Mick debate. Would give the fan base someone to rally around without any preconcieved notions

His job isn't in jeopardy this year but he's looking elsewhere?
He's mad because he didn't get a new lockerroom when a plan to build a whole new facility is in the works if he shows patience...he is acting like a spolied child.

5th/3rd is not the reason players are going elsewhere. If facilities made that much difference Duke would suck since Cameron Indoor is a dump and Butler would too since Hinkle is old and outdated.

The guy who "wanted to be here for life" isn't acting like a guy who "wants to be here for life" since he is entertaining another institution's overtures.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. He uses his own money for upgrades and raises money for this stuff on his own and for charters, etc, and has been since he got here...you know, when nobody on the planet with any career asperations would have taken this steaming pile of a job in 2006?

If we are going to act like we should be sitting at the big boy table when it comes to basketball, we might want to have our idiot AD actually do what he promises to do before he gets canned from a second job. This is about support from the school when it has been promised and not delivered for half a decade.

Don't fool yourself, this is all about tightening the budget. They keep kicking the can down the road and then we get to hire a cheaper coach. Nancy Zimpher would be proud.

A little dramatic aren't we? The problem was that UC didn't conduct a thorough search (even though they paid a search firm $250K IIRC) just like they didn't with Tubs. Had they conducted a thorough search, I'm sure there would have been numerous qualified candidates.

Facts:

1) UC did a search and the ONLY decent candidate who applied was Mick Cronin. Not a single name coach would even agree to an interview.

2) Zimpher did not want Mick so she ordered MT Suit to fire a search firm. He did.

3) The search firm came back and said the only one to consider was Mick because NO ONE else wanted the job (i.e., work for MT Suit & Nancy).

Just because YOU say it is fact doesn't make it true. Show me the proof. Mick was hired a day or two after the season ended and AK was told he was gone. That sure sounds like a long vetting process by Mr. Microphone, Lady Z and the search firm.

They had an entire season to search and vet candidates.

Becky Hammon - AC San Antonio Spurs

Interesting idea, especially if we could hang on to guys like Savino. We have some assistants that know the recruiting game well, if we can somehow hang onto 1 of them to help her.

I would be on board with her as the actual coach 100% if we have a good plan setup for recruiting.

Think back to when you were in high school.

It would be an absolute disaster.

While I'm not quite sure she would be ready for a job at uc's level, I do see her as an interesting option for mid majors. Yes, she would need a powerhouse recruiter but what candidate wouldn't. You have to remember a lot of these recruits come from single mother homes and are used to strong female influence. You would think mom's vote might lean towards her. A trusted coach/handler will like that she trained under the most respected NBA coach. I would think she has decent connections to international coaches/agents from her time overseas and the Spurs success with international players.

Most importantly she would bring tons of good publicity. ESPN would be running bits on her non stop. Breaking the sex barrier, Jackie Robinson comparisons, NBA players and coaches talking about her etc. Her first game could conceivably be just weeks before a female is voted president. It would also stimulate the stagnant portion of the fan base as well as draw in new fans.

Again, while she might not be a great fit for UC at the present time, I think to dismiss her totally at this point is wrong.

Obviously nowhere close to coming here but I always found it interesting Bilas never got into coaching. Is he buying time till Coach K hangs it up? If so you'd think he'd want to get his feet wet first. ESPN can't be paying him in the millions.

I too had wondered about Boyle. And before all the chatter starts about Colorado as a P5, much evidence suggests Cincy is a superior basketball destination. When 5th/3rd is finished it should be among the top 5% for on-campus basketball arenas nationwide. If he and Bohn have a good rapport he may instantly assume the lead in a very short search.

I read that ESPN pays him 2 Million annually.

I believe he was a Duke assistant during the Laettner days.

He was an assistant while he was getting his law degree from Duke. As soon as he graduated in 1992 he quit coaching. He does some skill camps and stuff, but I don't see him ever coaching full time again. No reason to with the coin he makes from ESPN and as a practicing attorney.

Yeah, did UC not treat him well during his year of medical leave?

Yet another factor that makes this a head scratcher.

Speaking of ESPN guys, I have always really liked Seth Greenburg, I know his record wasn't amazing in college, just have always liked when he talks basketball.

The one thing did for sure was pay him his full salary as opposed to making him take Long Term Disability. If he would have taken LTD he would have only received 50-60% of his salary.

Been told by multiple sources Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin and UNLV are headed in the direction of a marriage. Talks still ongoing, though.

Whoever is hired, I'd love for them to at least have some NBA ties or have assistants with NBA ties. If I were a recruit that would be incredibly important to me. I would want a coach who's top priority is getting me to the NBA.
