and the next entry on the so where have I heard this before list...
Bronson Arroyo was scratched from today's start due to shoulder soreness
you wonder if it's anything major- if this isn't it for Arroyo. Liked that the Nats gave him a chance- but he is old and brittle now....

RE: Spring Training!
is it me, or have we not had the number of Tommy John injuries this spring that we've normally had in the past few years?

empirically it seems that you're right, but I haven't seen any numbers. Giants did lose a good relief pitching prospect to it last week, but he's hardly a big difference maker

If you go to the mlb.com injury report, you see only a couple of recent UCL tears, but a ****load of guys "recovering from Tommy John surgery". A couple of questions come to mind: 1) Were the last couple of years the outliers? 2) The injury report is only for current major leaguers. Is it possible we're having the "normal" amount but it's hitting the minor league guys and we're not hearing about it?

Span did a half dive and got a boo boo on his shoulder. Who knows when he'll be back. I cannot stand over-30 outfielders. If it isn't one thing it's another. You're supposed to be a world class athlete and you can't fall down without getting hurt. Ridiculous

injured guys get injured. Fans constantly try to convince themselves that their injury prone guys aren't going to get injured. I used to be one of those guys, but I know Span, Pagan, Blanco and Pence will land on the DL at some point this season. I know that Cain will never again be what he was. Friedman and the Dodgers front office know that fragile players get injured, which is why they loaded up on SP depth.

that's why I was so ok with the nats letting Span go. I'm hoping that last year with Rendon was just a 1 time thing and not a bigger thing. But I do know at some point Werth is going to be out for 2 months at least... Just how Jeff Bagwell always was with the Astros....

RE: Spring Training!
Should/will the Braves try to move Eric Aybar to the Cardinals? What might they expect to get? Braves shortstop prospects Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson are said to be a bit ahead of projections, but still could benefit from some time in the minors, not to mention starting their arb clocks a bit later. But if a good haul good be obtained, Aybar is in the final year of his deal, and the Braves are not planning on contending this season, so why not? Or could they get more for Aybar at the trade deadline if they wait half a season?

A bit of revisionist history regarding Bagwell. Games played by season:
'91: 156
'92: 162
'93: 142
'94: 110 out of 115
'95: 114 out of 144
'96 (28 years old): 162
'97: 162
'98: 147
'99: 162
'00: 159
'01: 161
'02: 158
'03: 160
'04: 156
'05 (final season): 39
So other than his final season he played full seasons in 11 of a possible 14. And that's counting 1998 as a not full season. 3 out of 14 (or 4 out of 15 if you're counting 2005) is not great, but hardly Jayson Werth territory

yeah I guess you're right. It just seemed like he was hurt so much with 3 times in 6 years like that- and it was always the same wrist injury.
one that I really remember was Chris Hoiles from the O's. he only 2x played in more than 114 games.

i agree, which is why I wanted to check. It really did seem the wrist sent him to the DL every season. If you had told me he played four 162 game seasons I would've said you were talking about a different player. This actually makes me appreciate him even more.

Nice segue...
Dave Roberts confirmed today that Dodgers' first four starters are Kershaw, Kazmir, Maeda, and Wood. Battling for 5th starter are Bolsinger, Beachy, and Lee, and he hasn't yet ruled out Urias (that's a bit of a surprise). Wood had some forearm tenderness but he's pitching today so we'll see what he's got. They've got roster flexibility with the guys fighting it out, so with open days in the first month we should expect a lot of shuttling back and forth to the minors.
Urias has such massive potential - I worry about him being rushed but I know the team is concerned too so he must be having a great spring.

Got through the first inning with a K and 2 groundball singles, so I'd say his health is good enough

RE: Spring Training!
Span taking ABs at minor league camp today and Blanco and Blanks both in the lineup for tonight's game. All good news. Although at this point it seems like Gorkys Hernandez has the inside track on the 5th OF job, over Blanks

Is there a crossed fingers emoticon? Knocking wood? The plan is to get him to 60 pitches...
ETA: Box score shows first 4 innings, one run. No idea how many hits, Ks, BBs, etc. 5th inning melt down but, if he had a 60 pitch limit, that was either someone else or him getting tired. OK with either result. I think. (Kind of frustrating how little information is available w/o watching the games in Spring, but I get the reason why. I'm not supposed to make too much of this stuff. Which I probably would if I had it.)

He went 3, giving up 1, with 1 BB and 1 K. Seems solid enough

RE: Spring Training!
Ramos started spring pretty well so far batting 4-13 with his 1st homer today. Him being better would be huge for the Nats IMO.
The big difference that I see in his limited stats- where before he's been a bigger ground ball hitter, he's hitting more fly balls so far this spring....
