I have a list, probably on another thread, that has GSU and UTA as the SBC R1s
Now go after that AAU listing.
Considering that Georgia Tech just got the coveted AAU invite six years ago, and they seem to add schools at a rate of around one every five years, I think it's going to be a while before any of us in the SBC get in the club.
AAU is something you pretty much forget about unless you really happen to be on the cusp. Many great universities are not in the AAU. It should not be regarded as the holy grail. In fact, it may not even be desirable in the 21st century.

List of Doctoral University: Highest Research Activity (R1) Universities in Texas:
Rice
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Houston
North Texas
UTA
UT
UTD
TXST just went from Master's to R2 so they'll take that as a good step on their part.
Trauth is responsible for them getting this far in a short time. Not too shabby when you consider where this U was just 10 years ago.
I dont see txst on the r-2 list but I do see Idaho, u-laf, usa, and nmsu
