I will admit, I have been more concerned about the coach's ability to line up a good staff than the possible loss of a few recruits. It's late in the process and Houston, I would assume, doesn't have the type of connections that EW had.
Good thinking. Let me add some of my own thinking. Again, I wish the best for EW and his family and I mean it sincerely.
EW was coaching at the highest levels of college football for a short while with Texas and Ohio State:
1988–1989 Austin Peay (DC)
1990 Austin Peay (ST/WR)
1991 Tulane (assistant)
1992–1993 Southern Miss (assistant)
1994 New Orleans Saints (assistant)
1995–1997 Louisville (DC)
1998–2000 Texas (assistant)
2001–2006 Tennessee Titans (assistant)
2007 Minnesota (DC)
2008–2010 North Carolina (DC)
2011 North Carolina
2012–2013 Ohio State (DC)
2014–2015 James Madison
2016–present Texas State
If you look at his record closely, he has a lot of assistant titles. When EW did get a full title (DC) it was for 2/3 years or less. Why? NC passed on him for HC. Why? He is from NC. So, EW may have connections, but, do good coaches want to work on his staff? He does not have a "going places" career path. So, I don't think he has a "leg up" on Mike Houston. In fact, Mike Houston has created a career path. That could mean that he possesses rare coaching talent and good young coaches want to work for and with talent. I think Bourne might have done well.
