I signed up for the event but I don't really see anything to be excited about in terms of recruiting. I hope I'm wrong.

Why not? It looks like it's going to be exactly like the last recruiting classes, were you not excited about those?

How do you know that, because of Rivals. You have never met a recruit, seen him on film or in a camp, but yet the conclusion is drawn that this class is crap.

I don't care about Rivals. Did we beat out any other FBS schools for anyone? I can't say the class is bad, but after all the recent success, it doesn't seem that it has helped recruiting any. I mean, the 2013 team wasn't as good as the 2012 team. The 2014 team wasn't as good as the 2013 team. The 2015 team probably wasn't as good as the 2014 team though it's hard to say with the QB injuries. That is what makes me question the recruiting.

I think your expectations may be a bit high for a G5 school. No one is ever going to care how much we win in the G5...it's like winning a lot in the FCS and I don't see North Dakota State raking in top recruiting classes year after year even though they've won 5 straight FCS titles.

RE: 2016 NIU Football Signing Day Party
Winning at the G5 level is so much about good coaching. Just like in Div. 2. Taking a kid who is not on anyone's radar and transforming them into a solid player is the challenge. That is what Novak did. The coaches since then have inherited a slightly better talent level and coached them up. We have forgotten what it was like in the mid 2000's. I chalk up 2007 as a year of injuries.
That said, if the talent level is the basically the same over the last 6-7 years, then the ability to coach them up has declined. I don't see improvement in this teams performance over the last 2 years. Which honestly, seems to be since Carey has taken over as head coach. Yes, the QB situation was bad last year, but still, we got our clock cleaned in those last 2 games. Frankly, I have felt this teams decline over the last 2-3 years and to me, its all about coaching. I just don't see Carey getting better any time soon. We will see how the coaching changes effect the team this coming season. Hopefully, it was Cole's play calling that was so terrible and the next coach up does a better job. We need serious improvement in the O-line and D-line as well. Time will tell. Let's hope the S & C coach does a good job this winter and spring.

The decline the last 2 years may be more attributed to QB play as much as anything else. I think it's fair to say that the best QB in the MAC will likely end up being the MAC Champion. At least that holds true for about 8 of the last 10 seasons. With QB play being so important these days, it's a make or break season dependent on that position. It's the sole reason Toledo, with all it's recruiting prowess, can't win when it matters. They've never hit it big at QB. And yes, I have Matt Johnson better than Lynch in 2013.

I wouldn't go that far, but I would argue that BG's personnel on offense as a whole might have been better than NIU's at the time of the 2013 MACC.
Yes, NIU had Lynch, but think about this:
NIU was down two of of its top RBs (Daniels & KHJ), plus Stingily wasn't 100%, which was why Bouagnon and Draco played as true freshmen that year.
Also, NIU was all but down its 3 top WRs from the start of the season. Da'ron & Sebastiano were hurt & TLL was on one leg. Your top WRs in the MACC with previous experience were Brescacin and Brinlee, with Ducee & Beebe as true freshmen.
Plus, NIU was missing their best O-Lineman in Tyler Loos and Mathew Sims was a shadow of his former self after he got hurt earlier in the year.

RE: 2016 NIU Football Signing Day Party
Lynch was a great college football player and a dynamic offensive play maker, but not a great QB. I'm taking a great QB in big games. Lynch's track record in big games is pretty bad. He just didn't have either the instincts or the poise to play QB at a high level when teams took things away from him. He's easily my all-time favorite player, but I'd take Johnson in a big game over Jordan.

The biggest issue that game was we got killed by the BG TE across the middle. We absolutely got shredded and we did nothing to adjust. We scored 27 points but did nothing to shut them down.

Seems like demand is down this year for the event. I thought it usually sells out. Or is it bigger than usual?

Last year at the event they were already talking about increasing the number of people able to sign up. There was a second wing that was set up as a mingle area but was not really used. So I guess that they could have increased the capacity.
I also think that we have a bunch of bandwagon fans who are dismissing the event because of the small class and/or they disagree with the coach when instead this should be about helping to support the program.
Full disclosure I am not planning on attending this year because I am putting my free time and spending money towards going to the MBB games.

At least one of those who is pessimistic (though without claiming too much knowledge about the recruits) about the recruiting class is not only not a bandwagon fan but is still going to the event and MBB games also.
