RE: Stanford band taking heat again
As someone who marched four years in high school and college, I'd much rather see a well-executed show with strong visuals and music. For that, you look at drum corps in the summer, not college. But these kind of scatter bands, like show bands, have their place. If the students and admin are fine with this kind of stuff, then screw the haters. I'm not much of a fan, but every now and then they pull off something awesome (like Todd Graham's Inferno by the Rice MOB).

RE: Stanford band taking heat again
I think you all missed the point. It isn't about like or dislike. It is about the double standard. If an athlete had done something comparable (I can't imagine what that would be) they would absolutely be disciplined. The band should be held to the same standard as the student-athlete.

With all due respect to those who were in the band, who the hell cares about the band?

RE: Stanford band taking heat again
Its just young adults in their late teens and early twenties that have not fully matured yet.
They get more of a rush from making fun of others and traditions than honoring them. Its just in their nature to want to buck the establishment. Its fun, right?

Stanford band taking heat again
Save it for home games, don't take it on the road.

Scatter Bands can be really funny (yes even the MOB) but I really hate it when they co-opt a halftime show and turn it into a political diatribe.
Football Yes. Politics No.

Yes, this is the right answer. Stanford should leave the band at home - its time has passed, pointless to offend people just for the sake of offending people.

This.
At its best, the Stanford band has been hilarious (remember the buzzing chainsaws in Oregon in honor of the spotted owl?). But cows and farmers? Not offensive (unless you're offended by America's biggest export industry). But not really funny either.

I like the good B1G 10 bands, but there are some pretty bad ones as well. Iowa at the Rose Bowl was not good. Hideous uniforms, out-dated song selection, & bad arrangements will kill any band's entertainment value. In my opinion, the band staff at Iowa needs to step up their game substantially.

The worst B1G band is better than most...but you're also from/root for JMU so you know what a quality band is.
Iowa for sure wasn't very exciting out there, but they were the far better of the two.

Stanford band taking heat again
I have a soft spot for Stanford's band. I think their jokes are too corny sometimes & their musicianship leaves a lot to be desired. There's something to be said for a band with that much energy. They're always excited to be there!

If they consistently had good humor (like the ECU 51st state thing mentioned earlier) and didn't just go for "shock value" (and get in trouble for it) I'd probably have a soft spot for them too. They do look like they have a lot of fun out there, but with a lot of what they've done recently it's not something I'd personally want to be a part of.

Iowa's band was great doing the National Anthem. Stanford's band probably doesn't know how to play our National Anthem. Maybe Canada's.

They'd probably play "O' Christmas Tree" if they were ever asked to play Canada's anthem.

Revalie (sp?) died the week of the Rice/A&M game and the MOB formed a fire hydrant and played where oh where has my little dog gone.
The band got trapped under the stadium by irate Aggies and had to be smuggled out of the stadium.

Stanford plays a pretty mean Anthem. No one else plays it the same way. Probably the one thing they always play pretty well.

Good luck with that. That group is 100% student-run, I believe. The university has given up trying to reign them in.
Good. They shouldn't be reign in for poking fun at their opponent. It was hilarious.
