Immigrants caught at border believe families can stay in US
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of immigrant families caught illegally crossing the Mexican border told U.S. immigration agents they made the dangerous journey in part because they believed they would be permitted to stay in the United States and collect public benefits, according to internal intelligence files from the Homeland Security Department.
The interviews with immigrants by federal agents were intended to help the Obama administration understand what might be driving a puzzling surge in the numbers of border crossings that started over the summer. The explanations suggest the U.S. government's efforts to discourage illegal crossings may have been unsuccessful. Its efforts have included public service campaigns in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to highlight the dangers and consequences of making the trek across Mexico to cross illegally into the United States.
The Associated Press obtained copies of the interview summaries, which were compiled in reports by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Office of Intelligence. They said hundreds of people traveling as part of families consistently cited opportunities to obtain permission to stay in the U.S., claim asylum and receive unspecified benefits. Immigrants spoke of "permisos," or a pass to come into the United States. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20151030...a163d.html
RE: Immigrants caught at border believe families can stay in US
I think a major problem comes with the innate instability in these Central American countries. I'm sure many of these families are facing dangerous lives back in their homelands, but the idea that they will automatically be granted asylum because of this - or just go under the radar in the US - is pretty undesirable. We have to temper our intake of these people, and do it quickly - without such action, it'll be harder and harder to stem the flow of people who are fleeing dangerous territories in search of safety and stability.

You nailed it.
So turn them around at the border and send them home. They will tell their friends and family they cant stay. That will help stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

There's a reason they believe what they believe.
Yes but to suggest that we know why they believe it is silly. For all we know, that's what the coyotes tell them so that they can extort money from them.

It's equally silly to suggest they don't believe it in large part due to the actions of our president.

Yeah because many of these poor people don't have the money to eat but they have an HDTV with Direct TV and MSNBC.

Keep up, more than 50% of these illegals aren't Mexican. You are a fool if you think that people from Central America don't pay attention to what he says if it gives them the impression they can stay here, even temporarily.

I think you are the one who is being foolish. I happen to watch a lot of Latin television and I can assure you that they don't much pay attention to what is happening in the United States unless it has something to do with soccer.
The world does not revolve around the United States.

Yes you are right. Our president and his campaigning on immigration reform and his executive actions on immigration are blameless. Nobody from Mexico or Central America listens to a word he says and his actions have had absolutely zero impact of the influx of illegal immigrants believing they can stay here.

I could not agree more. It boggles the mind that we choose instead to send billions to countries like Iraq in an attempt to democratize them when we have countries just to the South whose people share many of the same principles of our founding fathers.

Is it the responsibility of the U.S. to provide stability to these countries? And btw, very few of the people down there share the same principles as our founding fathers - unless most Central and South Americans are deists and believe in the philosophical thought of the Age of Enlightenment.

Quote:Central Americans say news reports in their countries are encouraging them to make the journey north to the United States.
A mother and child told CHANNEL 5 NEWS that the message being disseminated in their country is, “go to America with your child, you won’t be turned away.”
The woman, Nora Griselda Bercian Diaz, from Guatemala, said she endured threats from the Zetas and extortion from corrupt Mexican police. She eventually crossed the Rio Grande with her 6-year-old Delmi Griselda Paul Bercian by her side.
Quote:Bercian Diaz said she has no family in the United States. Her hope of staying here relies on her little girl. She said the message in her country is that America’s borders are open to all families.
News reports in Guatemala say mothers and small children are getting bus tickets, Bercian Diaz said.
Quote:Newspapers in El Salvador and Honduras are promoting policies by the Obama administration that defer deportation to minors brought to the United States as children by their parents — known as "Dreamers" — and those that are housing illegal children at military bases in the South and West.
"Almost all agree that a child who crossed the border illegally with their parents, or in search of a father or a better life, was not making an adult choice to break our laws, and should be treated differently than adult violators of the law," Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson is quoted in a story about a new two-year extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy published by Diario El Mundo in El Salvador.
Or we can go to an actual newspaper in Central America and see what they are saying
Quote:However, the Justice Department, who serves in the process the role of the prosecutor, has pledged to take "as soon as possible" the measures necessary to achieve the purpose of legal proceedings and implement an immigration system in which the priority for the deportation of undocumented immigrants are not criminals and families.

The only way we could bring stability to Mexico and Central America is to stage the 1AD, 1ID, 1CD, 3ID at Ft Bliss and the IMEF, IIIMEF, and 4ID at Camp Pendleton and start the two prong sweep there only stopping when we read the Panama/Colombia border. Then treat the entire region like we treated the Philippines from 1899-1946 by treating them much like you raise a child in that they earn liberties as you show you have learned responsibility.
