Thoughts about Next Week's Diggin Dukes Campaign....
Did a bunch of small donations to multiple teams. Sort of fun! Also contributed to the collective for the first time yesterday. Go Dukes!

Made a contribution to the P&T. My company is doing 2 for 1 matching today to add a little extra!

Decided to keep it simple and give to the two sports that have brought me the most joy lately: football and basketball :)

Did someone drop a major gift to the Baseball fund? Only 94 donors to baseball but they lead the pack with over $50k donated and 3 1/2 hours left.
Perhaps funding Ikenberry’s ouster?

Over $400k total raised and it may get to half a million before midnight. That is pretty good for one day, but nowhere near what a top 25 football and a top 25 basketball team should garner.

I’m discouraged that the men’s golf team is in 11th place with only $10k. You can’t even buy sets of custom-fitted clubs for the team with that amount. Epic Rage C’mon elite country club alumni. Flash some cash.

Men's Golf had 33 alums donate today, whereas Men's Basketball had 3... That's....not great.

Also MBB in 7th place overall, behind Field Hockey. Head scratching stuff.

Upset city. The final count is in and …

JMU is a Baseball school 04-jawdrop
$52k donated to baseball and all other sports are inferior.

The most disappointing has to be WBB alums. Only 7? After all of the success that program has had? MBB alum was only 3...also shockingly poor.

How many of those alums even knew about this event?

Marketing was severely lacking imo.

It was all over social media which I’m sure most utilize as well as the emails. Poor showing from some of these athletic alumni. It’s sad if you got a free ride to college and can’t come up with $10 to donate.

If there was more marketing, folks would just be complaining that the DC is always asking for money/jamming it down their throats. Marketing is a tricky deal in the fundraising world.

I honestly though Diggin Dukes was an archeology club. They need to invest in a big-time leader for the outreach/marketing portion of fundraising, even look at industries outside college athletics.

RE: Thoughts about Next Week's Diggin Dukes Campaign....
I believe giving needs to be part of the discussion when potential students make their visits prior to applying to JMU. Play an upbeat video that is meant to encourage the thought process in that coming to JMU is a life long commitment.

I also think that any student who joins the Duke Club with a minimum gift of $25 should be guaranteed a seat at football game, no entering a lottery for those student Duke Club members. $50 gets a guaranteed ticket to all football and basketball games. $100 gift gets you the privilege of purchasing another GA ticket for someone to sit with you (friend, family, etc. that comes to town for a visit) for $20.

Living in the Lynchburg area, my daughter went with a Liberty student friend to a couple of their football games, she had to purchase her own ticket as a normal person off the street would purchase yet go sit in the student section with her friend. JMU may have some of these type things already in motion, but I see people constantly looking to purchase a ticket for their JMU student because they didn't get one through the lottery.

I like the idea of building in generosity into the culture of JMU more, but you need to be honest in when to expect recent alum to start giving back.

Right out of college, they are not making that much money and have student loan payments given the insane cost of college now. By the time those payments are done (10 years typically), a good chunk of alums are starting to have kids and are now saving for college for them and paying for childcare. It takes by the time most individuals reach their late 40s to have the disposal income to make any significant contribution.

So instead, you need to focus on those $25-75 annual gifts that create connection and the avenue for larger gifts down the road. And a simple way to fix that is create enough demand for limited seats, that being in the Student Duke Club is the only way to get tickets to games.

I am interested in seeing the price of season tickets next year and also any increase in Duke Club giving levels as that will be a barometer of how much new demand there is for non-student tickets.

And lets not forget Alger pulled the plug on supporting the football team a week prior....that probably cost the fundraising drive at least $100K.

MBB and WBB support from alumni was quite frankly pathetic and embarassing.

This fundraiser was well marketed via social media and emails for weeks.

Student Duke club members are guaranteed a seat. Student Duke club members get access to secure their tickets at least 24 hours prior to all students....been that way for at least 5 years.
