Most women and a lot of men don't feel comfortable with members of the opposite sex in their bathroom, regardless of what clothes they wear. Its not a right for someone to exercise their fetish and violate the privacy of everyone else. That people think this is some sort of right is an example of the narcissistic self-absorbed degradation that is damaging our society in many ways.

The LBGT movement is the most important civil rights movement this century and it's people like him that are standing in the way of tolerance and understanding. Transgender people are humans too and deserve equal treatment for who they are. If people can't get on board with that then they will be dealt with in time.

In my experience over many years and dozens of employs, those most often cruel to gay folk are other gay folk. To see some of the beatings the guys I knew endured at the hands of their "boyfriends" would make Mike effing Tyson turn his head.

Had nothing to do with "bigoted" straights, they were most often the ones there to help heal and console.

This dumb crap is all window dressing. The LGBTLMNOP "community" needs to clean up there own act(s) and attack problems that actually exist, not spend their time and energies attacking imagined boogie-men.

The biggest difference about a parent who takes their child into the restroom is that the parent is there to address any questions or potential issues that come up... and should know that the possibility is very real.... i.e. if you take a girl into the men's restroom(I've never seen that), you're going to have to be prepared to address questions. More often, women take their young sons into the restroom, because women use stalls, not urinals. What if you go in to use the stall and only urinals are open.... and a person who by all outside appearances is a woman, but is standing at the urinal. The confused child can talk to their parent.

What if the parent isn't there?

I've got no problem with family or 'unisex' rest rooms... but we need to understand the issues going on here. If you're honestly concerned about people with gender identity issues, let's not compound the problem by confusing children.

If family or unisex bathrooms aren't present and you outwardly present as a man, then go to the men's bathroom and choose a stall. If you outwardly present as a woman, then go to the women's bathroom and choose a stall. It's nobody's business what you do in there or what equipment you are using.

If you present as a man, don't you WANT to use the men's restroom anyway?

The concerns that Tom is railing about is no more legitimate than the one he is railing against. This isn't that bug a deal, unless someone is intentionally trying to make it one... i.e. someone who presents as a woman using the men's urinal.

I see that as a bigoted response and call him a hateful bigot. Also noting his prior affiliations with anti-Gay groups and Pat Robertson. And the fact that he doesn't live in Houston.

The bill says that businesses cannot fire someone for being Gay and must provide equal public accomodations. It does NOT mandate bathroom access (that provision was removed). Nor is there any case of any person molesting anyone, anywhere using a transgendered bathroom access provision (even though entire states have these laws and some of them have had so for 35 years).

Look, it doesn't matter what the bill says, FCAers/700 Clubbers will always advocate it being legal to fire all Gays and to demean transgendered persons. That's their ultimate goal.

But its getting harder for folks like Berkman and Grace "Church" to sell their hateful discrimination. So they have to use the campaign of "vote against Gay rights or your daughters will be raped". That's the sum total of their argument. And its being made by people who don't even live in Houston (Berkman doesn't).

Well that would be interesting because

1) The language mandating transgender bathroom access was removed
2) Multiple states and cities have had legislation mandating transgendered bathroom access since 1978. Number of 'nasty incidents' = ZERO. Not. A. Single. One.

If an incident happens, they'll be no backlash.

Look 3% to 10% of the LGBT community doesn't want equal rights. The back of the bus is fine for them. They tend to congregate in places like Conroe.

That's not where my gay friends live. I know two gay people in Montgomery County, and I have not discussed this ordinance with either of them.

I agree with you that there is a lot of misinformation about this ordinance. I will also agree with the other side that there is are distinct slippery slope possibilities here.

If both sides had the ability to be reasonable about this, I would like to think that some sort of accommodation could be reached. Right now, neither side shows any inclination to do so.

Even when we put up bills that don't refer to transgendered persons at all, the haters bring up the canard of 'men in women's restrooms'. They'd run ads saying 'this bill just opens the door to it'. They've done it elsewhere. And they're not being truthful. Nor does the opposition even live here. Berkman doesn't.

Those opposed to HERO know that they need to scare people by saying that someone is gonna get their women if they vote for Gay rights. They don't have anything but that lie.

Again, its straight out of the Klan playbook circa 1915.
