Nope. In this case I think marshall fans have been the source of all the details we have since his roots run deeper in your area than ours.

Hearing that there probably won't be much news until Saturday when they start bringing his body temperature back up to start testing brain function.

Geez, I'm not a doctor, and I realize this is not totally uncommon, but that line right there gives a pretty good indication of how serious this matter has been.

Continued thoughts and prayers for Coach and his family.

It is serious. being in the water as he was is where the concern now lies. Our best to he and his family. We in Huntington still consider Phil and Jenny "hometown people" They are from this area and come back often. Their daughter came back this past spring to attend the prom of with her old classmates from Wayne, WV.

I haven't seen the full story of what happened outside of some form of cardiac arrest/stroke. Was he in the ocean or swimming when it took place?

RE: Coach Ratliff in Hospital
Sounds as if the physicians have put him in "therapeutic hypothermia" Which means they have decreased his body temperature to about 92F. This is common practice for people who have had a heart malfunction of some sort AND has left them in an unresponsive state. It is USUALLY only done for about 12-24 hours.
To keep him at this temperature, they must chemically paralyze him to keep him from shivering to increase his body temp. When you do this, you medically sedate him so that he doesn't feel he is paralyzed and freak out mentally.
Arrhythmias can be easily treated with meds or a pacemaker. The after affects related to an "arrhythmia attack" for want of a better term, are something completely different.
If it is true that he fell into the water means that he may have gotten water into his lungs, which is treated easily enough. But, did he quit breathing, or was not able to breathe effectively for a while??? THAT is the concern here, from what I can gather... Did his brain go too long without adequate O2???
I am not trying to add fuel to this fire, just trying to explain some of the stuff listed above.

I am hoping and praying, as well as the rest of the Herd and Niner extended family members, for Phil and his immediate family.

Herd Nation in total meltdown. Phil with Chris Deaton the Kentucky Headhunters gone? Unbelievable. Best wishes for Mrs Ratliff and the children. The entire Marshall family weeps for your loss.

Suddenly, everything we bicker about on this board gets placed into perspective. It's a sad day in Louisa, Ky., Huntington, W.Va., and Charlotte... We all lost a good one.

Phil Ratliff is on life support in a Hickory, N.C. hospital. Former teammates and family gathering around him. Decision to be made.

Phil Ratliff remains on life support in Hickory, N.C. Hospital. He has shown very little brain function. His family will decide what to do

Yeah Phil isn't gone yet but his situation is very grave. Ratliff is one of my favorite players to ever strap on a chin strap at Marshall. He came to play every down.

Yes, he did come to play on every down. Full of energy and passion. He and his family are such great people. I'm still holding out hope.

Coach Ratliff seemed to be a great man and loved by all his players.

Here he is in our Countdown to Kickoff series that was filmed before we played a game. (Starts around 6:30)
