I don't see it at all.
Because the MAC schools are much better academically and as we all know prospective students and corporate recruiters all judge a school based on the other schools in its conference. Sarcasm aside the argument is that we won't be able to compete against these lesser academics schools for recruits because they all have lower admission standards and thus our programs will not be successful. I don't buy this argument either as plenty of top academic schools manage to field strong athletic teams as well even though they are in conferences with schools with lower admission standards, see Stanford, Ga. Tech, USC, Duke, Vanderbilt, etc.
Yea. That ability to compete argument is total BS. So, is our admin suggesting that we could compete in the MAC and CUSA because of likeminded academic standards of the conference and thus implying that the SB is a stronger athletic conference as a result?
You'all are bitching about only 1 of several issues and looking at it soley through a football lens. As has already been beaten to death on here travel costs would be much highr SBC than MAC. 17+ varsity sports teams= 100-150 away league meets/matches. Would have to fly to every SBC with exception of App. Geographically of the 3 conferences C-USA, MAC, and SBC, SBC is the worst fit.
Plus there are multiple JMU women's sports that the SBC doesn't have (lacrosse, field hockey, and swimming) of the top of my head).
BDK, I realize this is something you have been stating for a long time. Without that one little vein popping out in your forehead, can we have a moment for some discussion? I am asking for your help for me to understand so bear with me.
The purpose in travel partners is for the OLY sports. With this being known, I am having a difficult time seeing a JMU basketball team (or any other OLY sports team) flying to GA State, playing a game, then going to an airport and flying over to GA Southern, playing a game and then returning to Harrisonburg. It simply does not make sense to me (even if they utilize a bus between the two opponents). Having a team bus makes that round trip just seems so much more practical.
Per Google Maps: It's inside of 8 hours to GA State. It's 3.5 hours over to GA Southern. It's right at 8 hours back up to Harrisonburg. I'm having a very difficult time seeing our team going to three different airports, lining up buses, and all the other logistics that go into flying such a three destination trip. It is very, very difficult to find departures and arrivals close to the times a coach prefers (especially after a contest as they want to get on the road asap).
I ask two questions: Did our football team fly to Albany last year? Did our football team fly to Stony Brook in 2013? Those two schools are 30 minutes closer that GA State and one hour closer than GA Southern. If we utilized bus to those two CAA/NY schools, I have a very difficult time seeing us not busing to those two SB/GA schools.
I can see the Troy/South Alabama trip requiring air transportation, but that would be a bit of a nightmare since Troy has no commercial airport (I assume they utilize Montgomery). Most OLY sports travel commercial as I regularly view teams from every school in the nation coming through the Charlotte airport.
Again, please just explain without being emotional or starting your post with words like "bitching" as I am only trying to apply logic as I see it. I think many people get caught up in the FCS playoff rules of flying whenever the miles from point-to-point exceed 300 miles, but this has nothing to do with what a school chooses to do during the season.
In advance, I thank you for educating me.
There was no vein popping. Just annoyance with myself for posting on a subject that is a dead horse that hasn't just been beaten to death, its been pulverized. People have talked about this for countless threads (including all the ones it seeps into) and many thousands of posts going on 3 years now. And people can continue to waste their time talking about this (I admit I just did) for countless more threads and thousands more posts, with the same old teeth gnashing & admin bashing a million times over, and its not going to change a thing. JMU isn't going to the SBC.

Please reread my post carefully, I began with the OLY sports and travel partners. Then I moved to the football only discussion. Travel partners are not part of the discussion in football. I only pointed out FB as an additional part of being in the SB.

I really am seeking education. I respect that you are about as thorough of a researcher as we have on this board. I really want to know what I am missing as I can be very simple and narrow minded. I tend to use other's thoughts as my own. I humbly ask, "am I that far off when it comes to GS and GSU as those are the two I mainly addressed in my post?"

JMU has definitely been spoiled with the Virginia centric CAA ( during its golden years) which is primarily a mid Atlantic bus league conference.

I'm not sure what's going on but Withers and his staff keep tweeting about dominating the state (particularly the Richmond area) each time they land a recruit. I hope they're right about that and not just trying to use social media and graphics. Not that I'd blame them for doing whatever they could but I hope that actually means something.

Also picked up QB DJ Daniels from NC. Strong armed kid who will also play baseball. 2 or 3 star depending on rating service, and a much bigger arm that the kid we lost to UConn.

To be expected as he's a baseball player, but still bummed we lost the DC/Hylton kid. THAT would have been a huge get.

I'll be interested in how that plays out.
After seeing him in-game, it was meh at best.
I hope he does well and kills it wherever he ends up, just won't lose any sleep over his not being a Duke.

amswer to questions: Yes we flew to Albany. Chartered flight. We didn't play Stoney Brook there in 2013 they played here. We bused to Stoney Brook last year and it was a 8hr long bus ride very tiering for the players and coaches.
When played Troy in 1999 first round of the playoffs we flew to Montgomery chartered, and police escorted to Troy. That cost was picked up by NCAA on playoff games. This year the only flight is to Dallas for SMU I'm sure it will be chartered out of SHD, its easy on and off for the team.

Thanks for the information. I'm assuming the worst was the trip home after a long day.
I attempted to give the CAA some credit in thinking that we played Albany at home in opposite seasons from SBU. I should have known better. Like when ODU was in the conference, you'd have thought they would have given us ODU at home in opposite seasons from W&M, but not the case as it would have made too much sense.
Just curious, 2013 it looks like we had two potential flying games, Akron and UNH. What was the mode of travel for those two? Seems like someone posted a few years back that MM budgeted for two charter flights per season.
There was a time when we had Maine, UNH, UMass, Northeastern, URI, and Holfstra in the conference and in 2003 we played at UMass, at Maine, and at UNH. I wonder if we flew to all three. If you think SBU was bad, drive to any one of those three and SBU will seem like a cakewalk.

We always flew to Maine, New Hamshire sometimes we flew to Manchester NH some sometime we flew to Boston and bused to NH only a 1hr 45 trip. Umass we bussed one time but left on Thursday and spent the night in upper PA. Hofstra was the same leave Thursday ev and stayed in Allentown area then drove to Hofstra the next day. MM got 1 charter a year. we flew out of Dulles, BWI, on Southwest of United with other paying customers was funny to see a plane of purple travel suits and a few business and familys scattered among those.

Football travel is no big deal. Its fri/weekend and little class time is missed and its 6 games a year. Its all the other sports where it would be difficult.

As a player for Georgia Southern back in the 80's, I loved the rivalry with JMU. We had some tough games against each other. I was sort of under the impression that with JMU's new stadium additions that surely JMU was interested in moving FBS. I would love to see JMU and GS play again on a yearly basis. I hate that your people have decided they dont want to join the SB conf. I was sort of thinking it would happen. Seems many of you guys would like to make that move.

I hate that your people have decided they dont want to join the SB conf. I was sort of thinking it would happen. Seems many of you guys would like to make that move.
Please read through the thread, "We control our destiny".

In short, most fans want to move to FBS. Some do not. The administration does not and is using the SBC academic excuse, which many know is a red herring. The MAC and CUSA do not have openings but the perception of some is that we would move to those conferences if/when they do expand.
I do not believe that 1) they will have openings any time soon, 2) that if they did they would look to an FCS team over an already transitioned FBS team and 3) that our administration would move up if they were invited by either of those conferences.
As an old dude myself I enjoyed the Georgia Souther rivalry quite a bit. Tracey Hamm was one of the best football players I have ever watched live and I had the pleasure of taking in a game in Statesboro back in the day. Great crowd, great atmosphere and good game for sure.

Your frustration is showing through. I honestly don't think that's true.
