RE: The 5 best guards in UOM or Memphis State history
Butler has to be at or near the top of any list of great guards at our school. Probably many of you guys don't know because he was before your time but Butler was a great shooter, handled the ball as good anyone in the game & was a great passer too. Had he played when freshman could play, under even a reasonable tempo & with the 3 pt line, he would definitely be top 5 in total career scoring. Right there with Hardaway & Finch. Add Rose & Tyreke. After that several others as mentioned. If you drop the one & dones, then you have to consider JJ, Andre Turner - and going way back, George Kirk.

Real late to this thread but.......The Tigers have had many great scoring guards but not one of them could run a team like Bill Laurie. In my humble opinion he was the key player on the 72 team.

Either, depending on the situation, for Penny, CDR, Ced, Will, and Jones.
I should have had Parks on my Honorable Mention list. But I remember him as being more of a 2 than a 3. Thomas was a 2's mentality in a 3's body (he played a lot of both in the NBDL this season). Spoon was a 3 but pressed into playing the 4 out of necessity.

Totally agree: The OP was the best 5 guards at the UOM, not made to the NBA. No guard ever had a better career than Finch. Add in the freshmen stats and there you go. Add in the other guards got credit for 3's and Finch did not although he made a bunch.

Some remember how good Win Wilfong, Finch, Butler were when guys in their early 20's don't. It gets to be who is everyone's favorite which is o.k. too. It's great to remember how many great players the Tigers had over the years.
Agreed.
Seems as if there should be some kind of posting guidelines to qualify a poster's meaning of "best in Tiger history."
Sad that so many younger fans have no idea that our history is much deeper than their current age.
Best by decade was mentioned here years ago, and seems to be a better approach.
IMHO
