St. John's reportedly set to hire Chris Mullin. Arizona St., Alabama, and Tennessee are still open but I don't think I've heard anything linking Hurley to those jobs yet.

i saw them play on campus when i was a kid. great atmosphere, good team, big fun. saw them a couple times over the years at rosemont including against inversion and georgetown and the atmosphere was horrible, crowd tiny and energy low. they are a good example of why - unless you have a large active fan base - keep your games on campus in a reasonably sized arena. the push to do the big money big arena luxury box off away from the heart of campus arena thing has really hurt a bunch of programs that used to play in energized on campus arenas. the new lakefront arena will help depaul but a clever remodel of alumni hall on campus would have made a lot more sense and been a lot cheaper.

i know. the city that can't afford to keep its public schools open is finding a way to build a deluxe new arena which in a few years will help make depaul bball more relevant. i'm not saying that there isn't a narrative that says new coach rebuilds the program and culture, new arena opens, big city gets excited and rallies behind the team. it could happen. the reality is that it's a tricky job. top recruits don't necessarily look well on depaul. local youth coaches aren't big on the school. there's a big job ahead. think fordham. their a good private school in a huge city w great bball talent (crappy arena, true) in the top mid major conference, and haven't been decent since the ball became round. moribund big city programs are not easy to rejuvenate.
It's been years since I heard the story, but I believe the arena is a joint project with DePaul contributing a good share of the costs. I believe it is part of a large development project. Don't know the details.
I need to get up to date on it.

We'll, Hurley is a good coach, but knowing the coach wants out is not good. How does Buffalo's recruiting class look this year.

buffalo signed a couple early kids. a good pf recruit out of the detroit area and a 6-7 shooter out of illinois. both solid but not obviously special. i think they have 1 or 2 rides to use this spring.
the assumption that the coach wants out is speculation. all we know is that he had some contact with a big money big east job opening at depaul and nothing materialized. he's in a good place at his first head coaching gig at buffalo and if those returning kids, especially bearden, keep improving and he has another solid-strong year, buffalo fans won't care and more big programs will ask if he's interested in their open jobs.

Drew would have been a good fit, but think Hurley would have been wrong for that culture. Interesting hire. He's won at DePaul before, so who knows?

The Hurley saga is not over. In fact, I think it's just getting started.

Yes. Dan Dakich landed a nice gig with an Indianapolis radio station and ....oh wait, he got that after leaving IU.
You guys can talk all you want about how this school is terrible, who in their right mind would even think about....
But remember, we're talking about guys with egos. They all think they have that magic formula that can turn the place around. Love or hate Hurley - he has an ego that needs to be fed. Same can be said for why Chris Mullins took the St. John's job. Why is Jeff Caple looking at Arizona State? Coaches have egos (and think they have the magic formulas as well).

This makes sense.
Smart was supposedly making 1.5M+ at VCU so paying top dollar isn't apparently a problem...

that quote from Saul Phillips is money-

Ohio is not exactly blessed with quality NFL franchises either. If there is an NFL team more pathetic than the Bears it is the Browns and the Bengals have been large underachievers.

Saul is from Wisconsin, its a Green Bay reference, nothing to do with the state of Ohio.

UB blog is reporting Hurley now a frontrunner for the Arizona St. job and that he hasn't signed his new UB contract yet.
The soap opera continues.
