Looks like the P5 is encouraging Independents. Sounds like UMASS, NMSU and Idaho will be P5 games once the are gone from the SB and MAC. One would have to wonder if Cinci and Uconn could get TV deals like BYU as independents and get into the BE basketball conference in theory they would probably make more money. I think UCONN could but not sure about Cinci. Maybe a package deal? Does now appear to make things interesting.
I think that Cincy would have the easier time of it going independent in football if they had a viable conference to park their basketball team. I don't think the Big East would fit, and there aren't any real alternatives. The Atlantic 10 maybe? Patriot League? With the AAC a two bid conference, maybe those conferences aren't all that unappealing.
Off the top of my head, Cincy would easily be able to schedule Army, UMass, BYU, 3 to 4 Power 5 schools, one AAC school, one FCS, two MAC schools to get to 11. The Power schools would have to be a mix of lower level- Indiana, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Iowa State, etc. and 1 or preferably 2 mid to higher level ones.

I dont think the big east wants any part of teams like UConn or cincy who would ruin their conference stability.

I'm hoping Boise goes independent now. Independent > G5 in the eyes of the power conferences, that much is clear.

For what? The chance to play one-off cash grab games in SEC stadiums? That's the only thing this designation does for Army.
With army (and navy), most teams have enough respect to play them home and home, or at least home and nearby neutral.
Vanderbilt might play a home/home series with Army. They've done it recently. Vandy's last game at West Point was in 2009.
It's very unlikely that any other SEC teams will play at West Point. The last time an SEC team other than Vanderbilt played at West Point was in 1973 (Tennessee). Missouri played there in 1971 - not only a very long time ago, but also long before Mizzou joined the SEC.
TAMU played a two-game series with Army several years ago with one TAMU home game and the other game in San Antonio. It's likely that kind of deal, with a "neutral" site that heavily favors the SEC team, or a straight one-off money game, are the only deals SEC teams (other than Vandy) would make with Army now.
I'm looking at the more "middle tier" teams. I mentioned entirely because they might play in NYC or something, but the big appeal is stealing an extra CBS game. A team like Arkansas who recently played @rutgers, or one of the Miss schools, or USC are the teams I am thinking. Or Kentucky or vandy, teams where the guarantee game fee might be too steep. Get credit for the game, and get a game in CBS that otherwise might be on SEC Network.
They can get that CBS game by designating the not-really-neutral-site game as an Army home game. Arkansas might play Army at Jerryworld, call it an Army home game, and get the CBS telecast.
One issue for teams farther down the SEC football food chain, like Vandy and Kentucky: They can't command big bucks for a neutral-site game, and even if CBS has the rights to, say, Kentucky vs. Army, they might air the game on CBSSN and not CBS OTA.

It might start Hawaii toward Indy so the SEC and ACC considers them a P5 school.

I think they would air any sec team vs army on CBS. Especially sincethey only get 2 or 3 double headers a year. I realize the dynamics are different, but they carry Air Force vs army/navy on the main network, even though the afa games aren't near as big as the army/navy game. Just my opinion though. Especially if hey just asked CBS before scheduling it.

Indy means little to no nance of a New Years six bowl invite.

Sounds like some type of rapprochement in the works. Is the "American" members next as being power opponents?

Nope, there is no advantage to the P5 to do this. Especially the ACC or SEC, the AAC is in their recruitment area. The independents can't hurt them while the AAC in theory could. It is just another way to force the separation of the G5 & P5. College sports is now a business no longer amateur sports. My opinion, P5 is trying to get stronger G5 to independent. As I stated earlier, I see the CFP grouping independents with the G5 for the ACCESS slot for highest rank team in the future if more independents join the rank. In addition, I can see the move for teams D1 FBS Independent and bowl access be increased. Probably starting with the next bowl cycle in five years. Imagine in in 3 years you could have UMASS, IDAHO, UMASS, ARMY, ND and BYU as independents. Add teams like Liberty, NDSU and Grand Canyon who have the resources to go Independent, you now have enough Independents that can schedule against each other and schedule P5 games. Look at Hawaii, if they go independent, how many teams can get that extra home game by playing Hawaii. Only gets worse if Boise, Cinci and UConn were to jump as well.

Here is the ESPN write up:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...commitment
Nothing. It doesn't say anything to UConn or Cincinnati. If UConn and Cincy were service academies, then yeah you might be on to something...otherwise, it doesn't mean dick to 'em. Navy and Air Force are both already in G5 conferences, otherwise out of respect for the Armed Services, they'd likely get the same treatment whether it's merited or not by their actual on-field actions.

So NIU can go independent (again) and this time become a P5. Cool.

What a crazy world we live in.
The P5 know they shot themselves in the foot on scheduling, and now are trying to find a way out of the mess. SEC cans count Army any way they want, the playoff committee isn't going to look at them as a P5 type opponent.

But keep this in mind. Army home games are owned by CBS. Now a team can play @ Army, and and be all but guaranteed the army game will be on CBS, since cbs has the right to move any army or navy home game to CBS network (OTA) from CBS Sports network. And you know they won't pass up a "free" SEC game.
And of course if you play @BYU, obviously ESPN will use that game as one of G's required "ESPN" games. Thus you can guarantee yourself national TV gsmes by playing at either site.
This actually gives teams incentive to not only play BYU and army, but actually play them home and home.
You sure? The Ohio State @ Navy game this past year was on CBS Sports, not CBS. If Ohio State wasn't enough of a draw for broadcast TV then do you think that Ole Miss or Missouri would be?
