SEC now counts Army to meet its P5 OOC requirement...oh and BYU also.

@McMurphyESPN SEC will now count games vs. independents #BYU, #Army, ND toward its Power 5 nonleague requirement sources told @ESPN
Too hilarious...really...Army? Oh, well that give Navy and Air Force a P5 opponent now on the schedule.
BYU is happy and solidifies their Indy status.

This is actually HUGE news. If Army is considered a P5 opponent because they are independent and not in a G5 conference what does that say to UConn and Cincinnati?

The acc also questioned whether to include army or navy along with BYU, even though at first they said no.
But keep this in mind. Army home games are owned by CBS. Now a team can play @ Army, and and be all but guaranteed the army game will be on CBS, since cbs has the right to move any army or navy home game to CBS network (OTA) from CBS Sports network. And you know they won't pass up a "free" SEC game.
And of course if you play @BYU, obviously ESPN will use that game as one of G's required "ESPN" games. Thus you can guarantee yourself national TV gsmes by playing at either site.
This actually gives teams incentive to not only play BYU and army, but actually play them home and home.

Hey, tell any of your 3 teams to come to Michie to play and try to beat a P5 team.

For what? The chance to play one-off cash grab games in SEC stadiums? That's the only thing this designation does for Army.

With army (and navy), most teams have enough respect to play them home and home, or at least home and nearby neutral.

Didn't Army decline the Big12 invite because they didn't want to have their kids beat up on a weekly basis? Sounds to me like it will only be a couple of games per year.

To be counted as a P5 program and not a G5.
Navy would be counted as a P5 program but since they are in the AAC next year, they are counted by the SEC as a G5 program.
Just show the silliness of it all.

Navy kicks the crap out of Army every year. As of 2015 they will be a member of the AAC. However, Army is now considered a P5 OOC conf opponent by the SEC.
What a crazy world we live in.

Well it sounds silly, but indies aren't in either group. In reality thoiugh, if you had to choose, with only 3 seemingly permanent Indy teams (ND, BYU, and army as he only three who are Indy by choice), as a whole they do look more like p5 then G5.

I don't know what to say. This is a head scratcher. Perhaps the SEC will credit AAC and MWC teams, too? Will this provide impetus to independents????The double standard/hypocrisy is just too blatant. My guess, Aresco will have a forceful response.

If army is a p5 so is Cincinnati.

This is no different then how lower level teams in p5 conferences are still P5 and a team like Boise, winner of a couple of BCD bowls, is not. So no, army being considered a p5 does not do the same for Cincinnati. Or even navy. Or UConn. Army's "colleagues" now are Notre dame and BYU. Cincinnati's are not. Is what it is.

Looks like the P5 is encouraging Independents. Sounds like UMASS, NMSU and Idaho will be P5 games once the are gone from the SB and MAC. One would have to wonder if Cinci and Uconn could get TV deals like BYU as independents and get into the BE basketball conference in theory they would probably make more money. I think UCONN could but not sure about Cinci. Maybe a package deal? Does now appear to make things interesting.

Vanderbilt might play a home/home series with Army. They've done it recently. Vandy's last game at West Point was in 2009.
It's very unlikely that any other SEC teams will play at West Point. The last time an SEC team other than Vanderbilt played at West Point was in 1973 (Tennessee). Missouri played there in 1971 - not only a very long time ago, but also long before Mizzou joined the SEC.
TAMU played a two-game series with Army several years ago with one TAMU home game and the other game in San Antonio. It's likely that kind of deal, with a "neutral" site that heavily favors the SEC team, or a straight one-off money game, are the only deals SEC teams (other than Vandy) would make with Army now.

Look for the next change for the CFP to consider Independents with G5 probably in after first 3 years are done.

I'm looking at the more "middle tier" teams. I mentioned entirely because they might play in NYC or something, but the big appeal is stealing an extra CBS game. A team like Arkansas who recently played @rutgers, or one of the Miss schools, or USC are the teams I am thinking. Or Kentucky or vandy, teams where the guarantee game fee might be too steep. Get credit for the game, and get a game in CBS that otherwise might be on SEC Network.
